It was painful just looking at him. He carried that sickening smile everywhere. He could almost be classified as a different species. Most would be loved to be described as a vanity, elegantly capturing the beauty of others as they relished their mediocre appearance in the mirrors surrounding them. However, James strayed far from the concept of of dainty vanity set. A more accurate description of him would be a broken mirror, lugging around a dark aura that screamed misfortune. He was like the reflection that stubbornly escaped through the cracks of the mirror to haunt me.

"Hey! It's about time you're back, how have you been?" Avril cheerfully asked, a hint of skepticism could be heard in her voice. It didn't come off as a surprise to James, he had been missing for approximately 2 weeks, with only a pitiful parent's letter lazily written by his older brother to back him up. Luckily for him, the teachers couldn't care less if the boy had been skipping school, they even applauded how he actually bothered to make up an excuse. Given the school's reputation, so there was nothing new in this behavior.

"I'm pretty good actually, my parents were planning on moving us to another neighborhood so I was out of town looking at houses." James said, no hesitation evident in his voice.

"James, I know your parents are paranoid about whatever that thing in the forest is, but you literally can avoid being killed by not going into the forest. I'm your only friend, how are you going to survive without me? Speaking of friends, new kid right here was feeling a bit lonely so since you were gone, I decided to complain to him about the weather. And we instantly clicked, works everytime." Avril continued rambling proudly as she patted the back of the wide-eyed boy standing beside her.

"You don't need to look so shocked, just introduce yourself. Trust me he's nice." Avril laughed when she finally noticed James eyeing Charles curiously.

Seeing that the boy was making no effort in introducing himself, James stepped forward and extended his hand with a polite grin

"I'm James, nice to meet you."

"C-Charles" The boy croaked out

That voice, James snapped his head back up and peered closely at Charles.

"I'm sorry but do I know you? Your voice sounds really familiar." James asked, wondering why Charles was squirming so much under his gaze.

"No you don't." Charles stumbled back and suddenly sprinted to the school gates.

"Yo Charlie! Such a weird kid, see you later James." Avril said nonchalantly, slightly taken aback by the sudden escape of the new kid.

Oh my god. It was him.

Loud sounds of rustling reverberated around the forest. James began mercilessly dragging the body across the rough forest floor.

The trees swayed to the side, careful not to land the same fate as the lifeless body that the wet soil was struggling to carry. Rocks of all sizes felt threatened by the incoming lump of mass that James was going to bestow onto them. Even the droplets water in the nearby stream tried to escape by jumping out in different directions when the dead boy was thrown onto them. The usually noisy crickets decided to keep their mouth shut, not wanting to attract any unwanted attention from the pale monster before their eyes. The creepiest crawlers felt nauseated when they looked at the sinister smirk spread across James' face when he threw the unlucky boy's body into the shallow stream. He would paint his faint completely white, to the point where even the eeriest atmosphere couldn't compare to what James radiated. This had been happening for almost two weeks. Every new day, the sun rose and a body fell. Once James realized how easy it was to get away with murder, he carried on with his sins like a bicycle without breaks on a slope. As even if he did try to stop, he would still end up bruised and in pain, just like his victims.

James heard footsteps and a shadow of someone that the trees were desperately trying to hide.

"Who's there?" He shouted, his booming voice sounding more like a demand rather than a question. When he heard the soft whimpers of a boy, he smirked, knowing all too well that this was going to be his easiest catch. James strode over to the tree, pretending he was still unsure of where the boy's pathetic hiding spot was.

The spider watching from a nearby shrub decided to commemorate a moment of silence for the boy who was oblivious of the tall figure looming over his back. Finally, the boy felt heard someone breathing behind him and reluctantly turned around, not wanting to face the harsh reality of dying in an isolated forest.

When he came face to face with his nightmare, his mouth fell open.

"Surprise!" James darkly chuckled, feeling amused by the sight of the boy trembling in fear. Considering that his face somewhat resembled the glowing white moon, Charles' reaction of uttering "Oh my god" to himself and taking off into safety as soon as he got back to his senses was not astounding. What was surprising was the fact that James just watched him escape into the dark woods.

It was the same voice, same eyes and most importantly, the forest boy's strange way of running had an almost uncanny resemblance to Charles' run. It was definitely him. Charles would have told someone by now, so James' best option was to leave the town, before his metaphorical bicycle crashed and ended him forever.

"I'm telling you Avril it's him!" Charles said exasperatedly, unsure of how to convince Avril that James was in that forest, killing innocent people.

"Look Charles, Flashback Mary isn't a thing. You're just being paranoid because you were there in the dark. I wouldn't say that James is too innocent to kill a fly because he's too dumb to do it. It's impossible that he'll get away with it." Avril calmly retorted, questioning why she was even explaining such an obvious thing.

"James was missing for what two weeks? And when did the bodies start appearing in that stream, two weeks ago!" Tears of frustration were stopping themselves from falling out of Charles' eyes, although it didn't go unnoticed by Avril.

"Fine we'll go report it." Avril finally gave in, regretting slightly lesser when a broad smile appeared on Charles' face.

James decided to leave his home that night, it was for the best. Neither did he want his family to carry the burden of his sins, nor face the harsh criticism of society for something he couldn't control. Despite acknowledging that the world would be a better place without him, he wasn't ready to disappear off the face of the earth. That night, he left the quiet town that held his best and worst memories, for a cheap motel in the middle of nowhere.

James led a horrendous life, one that I would never be able to rest peacefully in. I headed to the small bathroom to wash off the random white splodges on my face before going to sleep, or at least try to. However, all the hope in my body vanished into thin air when I looked up at the broken mirror.

Not wanting to watch the hideous grin spread across James' face, I took a step back and turned away from the mirror before my reflection could get to me. My hand harshly brushed across the sink, causing the white paint and pallettes of highlighter to come crashing to the floor.

As much as I only wanted to see the reflection of a normal James in the mirror, my alternate personality of 'Flashback Mary' mercilessly pierced into my life like shards of broken glass. Unfortunately, I couldn't stop the shrill voice that dragged me into this hell from escaping my lips.

"Hi sisters!"

I never should have subscribed to his channel.
