15th December 1822

"Oh how rude of me. My name is Jacob."

I looked at the smiling boy and pondered whether or not to take his hand. I guess I took too long to decide because his hand begun to retreat.

"I see you aren't one fir hand shakes. It is fine with me... I mean I would not be too fast in getting comfortable with a stranger who pulled me out of the rain and offered me food either."

I could sense both the sarcasm and hurt in his voice. He looked away from me finishing the test of his meal.

"Sorry, my name is Chresanto. It had been.... A rough few weeks. It is nice to meat you Jacob and thank you for getting me out of the rain. "

"It was no bother.  Always glad to help. If you don't mind me asking, what brought you out here? This area I'd untouched by man and the nearest town is about a five hour walk. And you do not look equipped for such a journey."

I looked down at my hands. Almost breaking down in tears after remembering why I am out here.  I cleared my throat and looked back at Jacob.

"I am looking for somewhere safe to settle. You could say that I am running away from something...or someone. "

"I see. Week of you are looking for somewhere to stay for now you are welcome to stay with me. " he smiled

I was slightly taken aback. Here was a man who pulled a complete stranger out of the rain, offered me food and was now offering a roof over my head.  I never knew humans to be so kind hearted and here he was. A good man with a good heart. I smiled and accepted his offer and for the rest of the afternoon we were seated under that tree watching the rain pour as we conversed.

After an hour or two the rain subsided. We gathered our belongings and set off for his home. The easy was soft and wet making it a bit of a challenge to keep from slipping and falling.

"So " I began " where exactly Did you say you lived? "

"If I remember correctly I did not make mention of that. But now that you ask, I live outside the town I was telling you about. "

"Why not live in town? It seems like it would be lonely out here alone. "

He huffed and have a dismissing gesture.  "That Town had nothing to offer me. I would not want to surround myself with people who do not give a damn about anyone else but themselves. Plus,  I rather like being by my lonesome."

He smiled. But this smile was not like the others I had received earlier on. It was somewhat sarcastic and at the same time very sad and pained. I wanted so much to ask what was bothering him but I thought my interrogations would only add to his frustrations. An hour had gone and we finally made it to Jacobs home. It was a little wood cabin with moss painting the roof green. Actually it was not little,  It was quite spacious. There was a living room with a fireplace,  a kitchen, a bathroom and three bedrooms. This place was quite large for one young manb to be living in alone. Maybe his family comes by once in a while.

"Your home is very nice and welcoming. " I said as I walked out of the room he said I could use "Thank you again for letting me stay here for the time being. " I took a seat next to one of the windows.

"It really is no bother.  It would be nice to have some good company for once."

I nodded "So do your family visit often? Your house is very large and I cannot imagine you being here alone all the time. "

He smiled that sad smile again and stood up to make a fire. I watched him as he filled the fireplace with logs and throw a lit match at them. The flames grew but he remained standing by the fire.

"My family are all dead. I am alone here. " He spoke dryly. I frowned and instantly felt guilty for bringing in the topic of family.

"I apologize... I did not intend to intrude. "

"No need for apologies. It was a long time ago." his back was facing me and could see him tense.

"What happened...? "

He chuckled slightly andbshook hos head. "Oh you are going to think me insane but...they were killed by demons.  I knwobit sounds so preposterous but it is the truth. " He turned and looked at me sternly.  I could see the anger in his eyes andbshook knew that he was about to tell me would leave an impression on my mind.

"My family and I were on our way home from a puppet show I had begged my mother to take me to. And out of nowhere came these three men with yellow glowing eyes. They attacked us and made a meal of my family...they had a taste for blood. I cannot recall how I managed to escape but I did. With just a few injuries to say the least. I ran back to the town screaming for help. Screaming that these...creatures had killed my family.  But no one believed me. They made the conclusion that they were attacked by some animal
Bit I know better. I was there, I know what I saw."

After listening to his story I felt sick. I knew what had happened.  Those demons he spoke of were Immortals. Even though I want responsible for what happened to his family I felt guilty.  Those were my kind that killed them. Situations such as that arevwhat make me, at times, ashamed of beinh an Immortal.  Aunt Mira told me such tales. Tales of Immortals who abused their power and terrorized humans for pure pleasure.   Rather than seek them out for the occasional meal.

"I was only eight at the time. They tried putting me in an orphanage but I refused to be taken from my family home. I was not about to lose the only thing that had any meaning in my life. And fir many years after that I was ridiculed by the town folk. That is why I have no interest in going back to that place. But a lot changed that night. I changed."

For a moment just sat and thought of what Jacob had told me. My heart ached for him. No child should have to go through that. No child should be subjected to any form of mistreatment.  I should know. "I believe you Jacob.  I do not think you are crazy." I said reassuringly

"Of course you do...I mean what sane person would not think me mentally unstable. " he said letting his words drag.

I let out a sigh and ran my right hand over my face. He was obviously uses to the cruel comments that flew his way and people that passed their own obscure judgements. He probably is regretting telling me his sad story and now assumes that like the rest I will pass my stereotypical judgment.

"Jacob trust and believe me when I tell you this...but I too have had my own encounters with such... creatures.  They took my family from me as well. The worst part is that I had to watch the only person who cared about me die in my arms. I could do nothing to save her  or make her journey to the afterlife less painful.  All I could do was watch the life leave her beautiful face.  And there is not a dry that goes by that I do not wish I was in her place. But all I can do right now is keep living fire her and become the man she had always wanted me to be."
