Chioma's POV

I got home after my very exciting school day with Evelyn and I decided to confront my mother about the whole thing. She might probably be reasonable.
I flung my school bag on my bed and changed into comfortable clothes. I went to the dining room and started to attack my food like a lion who hadn't seen meat in a long while almost forgetting the purpose of eating in this dining room.
"Mother",I called out.
"O gini",she said in my language which meant 'what'.
"Why don't you guys let your teenagers date. I mean Nigerian parents in general"
"Young woman are you now mad. Have you started to see a boy and he's been feeding you things. You shall not have any boyfriend. Not under my nose",I had never seen her this angry since my little sister broke the figurines she claimed was her most priced possession and now she was screaming as if I told her I was pregnant.
"I'm not seeing anybody and I don't know what you're talking about. I just want your honest opinion on this thing. Or do you want me to find out on my own?"
My question put her off and she told me to finish the food so she could tell me. At least she was being reasonable because I was well ready to test the waters if she was so adamant.

"Do you want to spend all your little savings on boys? Or fail because you're talking to him late night? Do you want to get pregnant because I must tell you that you can't just date a boy. One thing leads to another. It's all in your best interest",she said all these things rather bluntly like almost as if she was saying 'why do I even have to explain to you. My rules are my rules.'"
"Alright. Be rest assured that I'm certainly not doing any of all this",I said and it almost sounded as a joke.

I was okay with her rules because I wasn't at all interested in the male specie my age. Especially not the ones on my street or in my class.
I proceeded to doing some school work although I heard a very stupid voice in my inner head telling me 'test the waters babe' and 'it can't be as bad as she put it' and I couldn't concentrate anymore.
I called Evelyn and told her about what my mother said and that I was waiting for my dad so I could ask him about it.

Evelyn's POV
When Chioma told me in school about her mission to discover why teenagers here couldn't date,I laughed. I never heard of such a mission before but I was ready to help her. Although my mother being from the States, would allow me to date,I'd still ask them particularly my father on what he felt. I sighed at what a mess I had gotten myself into.
I firstly asked my elder brother because he was far older than me and he said and I quote,"It doesn't really matter why they don't allow them. Live a little and if parents are thinking about pregnancy and all of that, there's condom for that. Or if they're thinking about grades, teachers nowadays can be bought or you'd rather still cheat." He was really stupid to be almost thirty.
I didn't ask my mother because she'd be indifferent and she can't really relate but when she overheard the whole conversation she outrightly said that some parents were to superstitious, some protective, the rest too stupid. Ouch.
My father asked why I was so curious and I said it was some sort of project but he told me the exact same thing as my mother only in this words,"Well some people are just too uptight in beliefs and they're basing parenthood on how they were raised. Some people think it's for the best so you don't do the wrong things and some people don't think too straight,no offences." It was almost as if they'd been waiting for my question and they had planned a response.
