Chapter 4:The Golden Reminder
The reminder of how my childhood went as the car approached the old mansion, the old bricks from 1986 when father and mother had built this mansion from an old abandoned lot for a cheap price. There had been a time where this house felt like home to me, it held memories of my mother from when she chased me till the moment they brought her dead body home. However, it stopped feeling like a home a long time ago after the death of my mother when father mourned alone without a thought of his ten years old daughter.
Either it pained him that I looked awfully like my mother, we held the same features or it was the fact he no longer wanted a memory of his dead wife.
"Lets go inside." Preston's voice made me turn and admire his string features. However, at this moment I wanted to yell that I did not want to be in the same mansion as Penelope. I was an Orphan, I had nothing left to call mine. Not a mother nor a father.
I nodded my head silently following inside, it was the very moment Penelope my step mother walked out and stood in front of me. She was wearing a black widowed dress, mourning the death of her husband or so I thought. Her two devil like daughters stood beside her, they both look different from what I last remember and so did Penelope it seemed as if she had aged and it could be seen from the wrinkles on her face and the lines on her forehead.
"Why did you bring her here Mr King, she did not bother to attend the funeral of her father she is a disgrace. Her mother would be ashamed of her." Venom could be easily heard as she so spitefully and angrily spoke, I felt a pinch in my heart as she mentioned my mother.
"According to the Will she is allowed to remain in the house until she is twenty five." I narrowed my eyes as Preston spoke, I could only live in the house my parents made for the next five years.
"What will?" I asked, confused. My attention shifted between Penelope who held a smirk and Preston who silently stared at me.
"A will is a legal document which your father had left which expresses his wish after he dies about his property and businesses. Unfortunately, your father has only left you an envelope filled with letters and a will which states you can only live in this house for the next five years." I could hear the smugness in the voice of Penelope as she explained, I felt little by little everything break inside of me. My father truly and dearly did not care about me.
"So who has he given his business, the property of this house and many other lots of his?" I questioned this made Penelope smirk. Making me know that the answer I was going to hear will be in her favour.
"As his will states his property, lots and even his business will be mine. As the wishes of my husband I will let you remain in this house for the next five years, however you must do everything I say or it will not be long before I throw you out with out a penny to eat or find shelter." She threatened, my eyes widened. She handed me a white envelope which I assumed was where my fathers letters were in, I wondered why she was even letting me live with her and did not just throw me out.
"You opened the envelope my father gave me. How dare you!" I yelled, anger had consumed me. The hatred I had kept hidden from the day she married my father came out. I was in pain, hurt and angry how my father had tossed me to the side. His only daughter, the real heir to his business and the only child who should be receiving anything.
"OH, hush. My house, I am able to do what ever I would like. I suggest you begin to find a work and give me rent every end of the month till the day you are twenty five and can leave this house." I glared at her as I gripped the envelope into a ball running pass her as I ran towards my bedroom. A tear escaped my eyes as I stood with the door wide open, my mothers painting tossed to the side my cream painted walls were dusty pink and instead of my king sized bed was two double beds with my two smirking step sisters who were painting their nails.
"Did mother forget to tell you, your room has been shifted to our previous room. We deserve the balcony and this enormous room and not you." I gasped, picking up my mothers painting and turning around before making my way to the twins bedroom which was before I left. All my stuff had been tossed here, The room looked more like a garbage then a bedroom.
"As a business partner to your father, I have come to offer that I would pay for your tuition fee for university in a top business school, in return you would work for me as my personal assistant." My eyes widened at his words, dropping the envelope to the ground I raced to him and wrapped my arms around him. I closed my eyes, enjoying his colonge, pulling him closer as he wrapped his arms around me tightly. We both were lost in the moment, our hand hugging each other as we enjoyed the shivers we felt.
We parted once we heard a cough, Preston instantly left me avoiding any eye contact with me which angered me as I turned to glare at who ever was behind Preston to see none other than Caroline herself.
"Are you done?" She spoke, anger laced in her words as she glared at me. Her arms crossed under her chest as she wore a formal dress, she still remained equally skinny as I last remembered her.
"Mr King, Thank you." I smiled like a teenage girl who was talking to her crush, his eyes finally met mine and it was the moment I saw the lust in his eyes, making me want to bite my lower lips. Even though, I knew he lusted me and wanted me I knew he would never try to put his hands on a girl which was twenty years younger than him. I had to do something.
"No need for any formality, Apryl. Call me Preston."
