"Fear. It's the most basic, the most human emotion. As kids, we're afraid of everything. The dark... The boogeyman under the bed... And we pray for morning. For the monsters to go away. Though they never do. Not really." -Jug-head Jones (Riverdale)
The icy breeze that came through the small window sent a shiver down my spine. Around me there were a dozen other girls all huddled together trying to stay as warm as possible. We're all locked in a cold cellar, with only a window at the top of the high walls. There's a potent scent of foul body odour lingering through the air making it hard to breathe. Some of us girls haven't had a shower for a few months. I stared out the window at the beam of light coming from the full moon which broke through the darkness making a few of the malnourished girls visible. I had been silently crying, everyone had noticed but nobody cared... The darkness of the night slowly turned into the cool uneasy morning. I heard footsteps walking towards the compact dark room slowly getting louder and he drew closer. Fear filled our faces as we heard him grasp the doorknob... The door swung open...
"I see you have already awakened..." Dorian said in a deep masculine voice. Quickly, all the girls huddled in a corner afraid of what his next move would be. Just then another man I didn't recognize walked in. He slammed the door shut creating a loud bang. They both slowly paced the room until Dorian's eyes met mine.
"You there, in the green shirt." he shouted. "stand up." He demanded. Not knowing what to do I quickly stood up, but to my disadvantage my legs collapsed. Before I could apologize or say a word, his coarse hand slapped against my face.
"Stupid girl." the man laughed. "she's not worth your time Dorian." He said staring deep in my bright blue eyes. Dorian looked over at the smallest girl named Alyssa and demanded her to stand up. With trembling legs, the small, malnourished girl stood up. The fear in her eyes was enough to kill someone. Dorian put the inexperienced girl over his shoulder and was about to walk out when I spoke.
"No! Take me instead!" I screamed. "she's scared, take me in as a replacement for her!' I demanded. Dorian scowled at me. The small child had tears rolling down her pale cheeks. Fear filled my eyes as Dorian ambled towards me.
"What do you think, Kleros?" he asked the man. "I don't know if this other girl is worth the amount this young girl is." His words were like razor blades against my skin. Kleros nodded at him, and Dorian put the child down. He grabbed my arm digging his coarse fingertips deep into my skin. As we were walking down the long narrow hallway, I realized the mess I had gotten myself into. We slowly came to the end of the long hallway and there stood a compact room with a bed. Along the hallway, there were about 15 bedrooms all with padlocked doors."You take her from here." he ordered. "make sure you get her cleaned up so she's presentable." he muttered. Unfortunately this hasn't been the first time I have had this happen to me. The room number fifteen was always my room, whenever it was my turn to go to the rooms Dorian would let me shower and get "dressed up". The first time he sent me to the room, I thought he was getting me ready to go home. That night all my dreams were ruined. I will never be able forget it... Once I had showered they locked me in the small room for a few hours until the first man walked in.
"Hey there." He whispered. I couldn't help but notice his tattoo on his arm. Two small eyes above the heart shape which was broken in half. Down the middle, where the heart breaks into two, tears run through it like a small river.
"Hey..." I said nervously as I pulled up the thin sheets. The door slammed behind him and the room went dim. This man was different than most of the men that have come through this place though. He didn't get onto the bed, or try to come close to me. He just sat down on the chair that sat beside the bed.
"Don't worry.." he reassured me. "i'm here to try to get girls like you out of this place.." My heart skipped a beat. Was he actually going to try to get me out of this place??
