When I opened my eyes, I realized I had fallen asleep in an unfamiliar yet highly minimalist room. It was a contrast to my pink and girly room in China, which served as a reminder that I was actually inside the guest room of my fiancé's penthouse.
I attempted to sit up, but a sudden jolt of pain forced me to stay still.
"Ugh... My foot." I sighed in annoyance, knowing that I should have used one of my suitcases to stop the door instead of my right foot.
Moments later, Henry barged into the room unannounced. And with a sarcastic tone, he asked "Did you enjoy your beauty sleep?"
After looking at the antique clock on the wall to Henry's left, I was struck by the realization that I had slept for nearly fifteen hours. Yet, it still feels like my life battery is still in 35%.
I don't want to be involved in another argument in hope to save my energy so, I chose to be silent.
The air grew thick with unspoken tension as we exchanged wordless glances, the unspoken question flying in the thin air.
Henry cleared his throat to break the suffocating silence.
"I hate to say this..." He begun. "But you need to change and come with me because my parents want to personally meet you."
A dismissive "Cool..." slipped from my lips, and I intentionally looked away, giving him the cold shoulder.
Henry rolled his eyes and turned his back to me. The door, a victim of his frustration, met the frame with a slam, producing an unexpected and irritating screeching noise.
"Get lost!" I yelled out, unable to hold back my frustration any longer. "I'm not coming with you, you moron!"
My future husband came back, looking very serious. I knew he was about to teach me something important, even though I wasn't expecting it.
With measured authority, his lecture finally began, "You know what? First of all, this is my house. Second, you do realize that I'm older than you, right? Lastly..." He paused, allowing the weight of his words to sink in.
"Lastly, what?" I asked, giving him an I don't give a fuck attitute.
"You should be fucking thankful that I accepted this nonsense arrange marriage our parents planned for the two of us just to save your family's ass." He finally added, continuing his statement.
I was left speechless.
The truth in his words was hard to deny and I couldn't think of a better comeback to win the argument. So, I decided to concede defeat.
Henry on the other hand also seemed surprised by his own words, but again, I didn't say anything.
I knew I had to prepare for the important meeting with Henry's parents, so I quietly left the bed, paying no attention to the throbbing pain that my right foot was giving me.
Reaching for one of my suitcases to find something I could change into, I sensed Henry was looking at me. So, I calmly requested, "Give me ten minutes..."
"It's cold outside, so it's better to put on something that can warm you." He advised before leaving.
"I can't believe you actually have a heart..." I murmured in astonishment as I watch him walk away.
I inspected my suitcases, continuing my quest for an outfit. All the underwear was there, as well as makeup, various turtlenecks, tops, pants, skirts, and footwears. However, I noticed something was missing - a coat. I assumed my mom had forgotten to pack one, possibly thinking that Korea wouldn't be as cold as our home country during the winter.
