I was 8 years old the first time I heard the screams. Back then I didn't understand, so I would just turn to my mom for help. Of course, she would confort me and reassure me that everything was fine, and that it was for the better of the world. Soon I learned to accept that, like everyone else. But I never quite understood why pain was so crucial for the survival of the city.

The people who were dying were tainted, after all, but did that really mean they deserved it? The thoughts swirled around in my head, stirred by the slightest breeze. Maybe the government was being too cruel-

No, I scolded myself,Those are treasonous thoughts. You've had enough close calls as it is.

A voice coming from the front of the classroom jolted me out of my musings.

" Mr Wood! Since you seem to have decided that you are above this lesson, would you kindly tell the class what I was just talking about?" Mrs Cornelia demanded in her nasal voice.

"Uh, n-no miss" I stuttered, shrivelling beneath her iron-clad gaze, and stiffening as I heard snickering coming from my left. Aaron Roy. That jerk.

With his molten gold hair and muscled frame, he always seemed utterly inclined on picking on people as much as possible, and unfortunately, most of the time he succeeded. Just like he succeeded at everything else. School, bets, games. You call it.

" I see..." The teacher continued" Well maybe you could ponder it over detention. Class dismissed!"

Sighing, I walked out of the door, almost getting knocked over by the stampede of students aching to talk to their friends.

"Hey Avery!" A feminine voice called from behind me. I twisted my head around, trying to find my best friend in the middle of the crowd of high schoolers.

" Over here!" She yelled, once again. Spotting her lingering at the edge of the now-thinning mob, I plodded over.

" Hi Emera" I mumbled warily.

" What's with the gloom-and-doom vibes radiating off of you right now?" Emera asked, smirking and crossing her arms

Immediately, heads turned at her definitely not feminine pose. Of course, I was accustomed to this, she was quite the character. Sporting jaw length brown locks-the minimum length for a female- and a lithe body, it was easy for people to think of her as girly. Boy were they wrong. Emera was rumoured to have violated the code, in various instances, all of which had no proof to back them up, so she was let go. And even if she never outright disobeyed the code, she silently rebelled, cutting her hair a fraction too short, or stealing shirts from her dad and rolling up the sleeves. In fact, we were so utterly different from each other, that under any other circumstances, we would never have been friends. But with her being the outcast, and me being the scrawny kid, we had no one else to hang out with.

" Em, stop!" I hissed, leaning forward" You could get in trouble for violating the code!"

Emera rolled her eyes, but relented nonetheless " You still haven't answered my question, Avey"

I fumed."Don't call me that! And, for the record, the reason I'm radiating gloom-and-doom vibes is because I have detention. Again."

" Again? What did you do this time?"

" I got a bit" I paused to evaluate my choice of words "Sidetracked"

She snorted a laugh" Was it Kesha's face again? You seem to get sidetracked whenever she's around"

Kesha Berry was the most popular girl in school. So, naturally, she would have the looks and personality to match. Her auburn hair fell in perfect tresses down her back, and her full lips seemed to be constantly mocking the nearest unsuspecting girl. Which most of the time, unfortunately, was Emera. This had created such a deep rivalry between the two girls that the teachers had been forced to move them into different groups, hence why me and Emera no longer had classes together. Still, even with Kesha's temperament being as rotten as it was, I couldn't help falling for her. Just like 20 other guys in our class.

" It wasn't her..." I muttered, trying to preserve my dignity

"Sure it wasn't" Emera chuckled " Well to toodle-doo smart boy. Have fun in detention!" And with that, she stalked off, leaving me blushing in the middle of the hallway. If only she had known the thoughts that were really going through my mind.
