David had left work in a hurry and driven fast to the hospital after he received the call. After waiting in the corridor for a while, the nurse ushered him in and he walked slowly to his wife's bed. He held her hand and returned her smile."It's a girl," Shirley said.
He turned to the sleeping child in a cot beside the mother, he stared at the baby for a while then turned back to his wife and to the baby again, then to his wife.
"What's wrong?" She asked.
"I'll be back," he said as he turned around and walked out the door without another glance or another word, he looked lost in thoughts as he drove out of the hospital's premises.
---
"David are you okay?" Shirley asked as she opened the door for her drunk husband. He didn't answer as he pushed her out of the way and stumbled into the living room.
"Where have you been?" She asked, following after him.
"Hey dude, you okay?" Jeremy, David's brother, asked from his spot on the couch.
"In case you've forgotten, I just had a baby and you're a father of three, so you have to do something better than to go drinking." Shirley said with an annoyed expression.
"Drinking doesn't take you anywhere." Jeremy said.
"Nobody drinks it as a form of transportation." David slurred before going up the stairs, Shirley hot on his tracks.
"What are you doing?" She asked as she watched him get his pillow and a spare blanket.
"I'm sleeping downstairs," he said, brushing past her and Shirley scoffed.
She slid against the wall and sat on the floor, put her face in her hands and sighed. She wondered why he was suddenly like this.
"Mom?" Naomi called and Shirley looked up at her daughter "bedtime story?"
"Not tonight baby, my head is aching." Shirley said.
"Okay, goodnight then." Naomi said with a small smile.
"Goodnight baby."
