Kat didn't go to bed. She drove. She drove two hours north, getting more and more lost before getting her phone to navigate her home.
Thinking the entire time. Truth was she was attracted to Nate but couldn't figure out if it was because they were the only two immortals in the world. Or so it seemed.
Had fate brought them together? Thousands of years and Kat still didn't know whether or not to believe in fate.
The sun began to rise in her driver side window throwing pinks, purples, and oranges across the navy sky.
"Red sky at morning, sailor's warning," Kat muttered to herself. She rolled down her window and let the restless winds in to whip her hair around her car. The cool air smacked her face and settled her churning stomach. Encouraged by the wind, Kat dialed up the radio and let sound assault her as violently as her hair in the wind. Her speedometer climbed over 140km/hr as her mind went clear for the first time in days.
She had known she was being followed. She'd even suspected it was law enforcement. But a newly immortal FBI agent looking for who knows what? Hadn't been on the list of possibilities.
She let her speed fall as she drew nearer to civilization; her house was still far from the city center, but close enough that a cop might be lurking to give her a speeding ticket and all her ID was forged.
Instinctively she detoured towards her favourite local coffee shop, in desperate need for caffeine and sugar. It was places like this that made Kat have to move on every decade or so. She loved the baked goods and the cheery atmosphere; she couldn't help but go in and chat with the baristas and owner.
Eventually those people would notice Kat didn't seem to age and Kat would move on. For now, she enjoyed the experience so much she was going in to sit in a corer booth after spending all night in a police interrogation room.
The bell on the door chimed merrily as she entered. The barista looked up from the whistling espresso machine.
"The usual, Kat?" she called over her shoulder.
Kat smiled back. "That'd be amazing, Saundra, thanks."
The relief to be somewhere so comfortable was evident in her voice. She turned to find a table.
"Katarina."
A warm voice spoke her name like a caress. It was only a whisper, but she felt in her chest like a bass drum. It was coming from the best booth in the shop and it was a voice she had left behind not too long ago. She turned on her heel with a grimace.
"Nathanial."
Her cool glare met his beaming smile, and both felt a little knocked off balance.
"Join me" He finally said, more of a command than an order but he said it with suck a child-like grin on his face Kat couldn't help but start to thaw.
"I thought you said you'd call?" Kat asked sarcastically.
"And I thought you said you needed to sleep," Nate chimed back. "I guess we're both liars."
The barista came to the table to deliver Kat her iced coffee and lemon pound cake; the usual. She giggled and spoke mostly to Nathanial, who was amused by the girl's attempts to bat her eyes at him. Kat rolled her eyes and started coffee time. She was happy.
A manager finally called Saundra away from their table. Barking at her to focus on her responsibilities and pulling her away from a really giggly conversation about her university major.
