I awoke last night
To no great fright
But rather an irritation
Someone had chosen my doorway
As their destination
Bitterly I arose
From my bed where low
I had been laying in my mind
To greet this visitor
And see the hall's shine
With a creak and a roar
I opened the old door
And what I should ever see?
Nobody was there
Nobody except me
I closed the door
And looked at the floor
Someone being discreet
A shadow under the wood
And the sound of feet
I tore open the portal
And looked all through the hall
And closed it again
I had seen no one
Not a single man
Once again it returned, the knocky knocking
Sending the whole door's frame rocking
I grabbed the handle
But it did not twist
He was holding it, the vandal!
I released my hold
My blood running cold
The door opened slowly
To show me a sight
Of something most unholy
Nothing stood there anymore
That had been knocking at my door
The empty hallway yawned
I left the door open and backed away
Wondering what I had spawned
Still nothing came in,
No sounds, no more din
I left the door open
Now, returned to my bed
And let whatever it was, come in
