She joined the Survey corp because she wanted to see what was beyond the walls. She had been there for a few weeks before Levi, Isabel and Furlan showed up. She got along pretty well with Isabel and Furlan, Isabel went on to call Melody 'big sis'. After Furlan and Isabel die Melody is devastated, feeling terrible that she wasn't there to help them. Not long after that expedition Melody finds out her brother and his wife were killed along with their unborn child his wife was pregnant with. She was relieved her niece Mikasa survived but that did not stop her from grieving. She went to go see Mikasa and hugged her tight as she cried mumbling 'I'm sorry' over and over.
