Chap 20

Sebastian waited in his room. He’d wanted to pace, but there were too many servants watching. So, instead, he was sprawled out on the large bed flipping aimlessly through old books he’d found. Whatever was on the pages wasn’t registering at all, he only paused if there were interesting pictures to look at. He should be planning an escape, but he hadn’t seen enough of the grounds to really know how to get out.

Another servant meandered past; the sly glance cast at the book he was reading confirmed Sebastian’s suspicions. He was being watched. Just as he was thinking of throwing the book at him, a pounding started on the door. He sat up as his eyebrows rose in confusion. Lucias had said he would be left alone tonight.

The pounding came again and this time Sebastian sighed and pointed at the door. The servant blushed and immediately ran forward to answer it. Don’t spy so hard you forget to look like you’re not spying, moron. There were a few quiet words that he couldn’t pick up, but he caught the gist that the servant didn’t want to let someone in.

“Please not the old biddy, please not the old biddy,” he mumbled under his breath, waiting to see who was violating Lucias’ orders.

His hands fell to his sides as the beautiful girl with all the control floated in wearing a soft gown. He hadn’t seen her since that first night and he wondered why she was back now. Something about her poise worried him, though.

“Leave us!” Her tone reeked of authority and the servants snapped to attention as it echoed around the large space.

She stared each one down as they darted out. One servant even dropped the towels she’d been carrying in the middle of the room. Sebastian watched as the mystery girl stooped gracefully to cradle them to her chest before setting them on a nearby chair. She took her time tidying the small pile of linen. She was nervous.

“Can I help you?” Sebastian laid back on the bed. “Blood or something else?”

She blushed when she followed his arm down to where his hand cupped his sex. He watched as her head spun away. Not the something else then, shame. Sebastian gave himself a mental shake. He should be trying to find an escape not luring some young vampire thing into his bed.

“Actually, I’m here to help you,” she whispered, moving closer to the bed. “No tricks though.”

“Honey, I’m an angel not a magician. You want tricks, you’re in the wrong room.”

She giggled, the sound raising the hair on the back of his neck. She was a hunter and she was ancient, despite her appearance. Sebastian studied her closer, waiting for her to reveal what she’d come for.

She sat on the bed gracefully and leaned in close to him. If he shivered, her lips would have touched his neck. He found himself suddenly turned on.

“I have no interest in being a broodmare for these things. You can put that away.”

He was tenting the sweatpants that had been loaned out to him. He grinned. “Considering it looks like you’re ready to pounce on me, I’d say it adds to the disguise.”

A hand coiled tightly around his leg and pressed into his groin. His little angel instantly lost interest in the game. Damn, she’d unmanned him. Sebastian looked up from his deflated fellow and locked unto the red-eyed witch.

“You and your lady friend need to leave. The plans Lucias has for you could wreck our whole way of existence here.”

“Thought you weren’t friends?”

“We’re not, but if the council gets involved my life will be at an end.” She released the hold on his leg and moved to sit across his lap.

“Now who’s playing with fire,” he joked.

She leaned forward. “There are many eyes and ears around here. It’ll simply look like I disobeyed his orders. I’m a pet of sorts, so he’ll let me slide if I only wanted to play.”

Sebastian’s voice dropped to a whisper, “And what do you want to do?”

He moved in and placed a quick kiss on her lips. She tasted like cinnamon.

“I want to escape.”

Just for the cover-up effect, Sebastian planted his lips to hers and rolled her under him. There was fire in her eyes, but she let him have his way. His mouth moved to her neck.

“Why?”

She writhed against him, trying to get free. “I’m a slave, a prisoner, no better off than you. I want to leave, but I have to take my sister with me.”

He let her roll him back over. “Where?” he only asked, not wanting to give away her secrets.

She didn’t disappoint. She leaned in and covered his body with hers. “Let me introduce myself. My name is Elizabeth Green.”

The fight left Sebastian and he lay there stunned. “Green… as in Dr. Green?”

“My sister,” came the hiss in his ear. “She works here when needed to secure my survival. I comply to ensure hers.”

Again the tug of war for position and again Sebastian ended up flat on his back. “Wouldn’t you want the council to come?”

“Of course not,” she hissed and then lowered her voice again. “It’s against the council rules to turn a different magical race. If they discover me…”

He knew the rest. They’d destroy her and the one who turned her. And then they’d probably go after her sister. Poor Dr. Green was just a victim of knowing too much and that was something the council detested. So, Dr. Green’s earlier threat of notifying the council had been an empty one.

“An inside joke in a way,” Elizabeth smiled and pulled back.

Great, mind reading sisters… fantastic exit strategy.

“I thought so,” she smirked, leaning in and giving him a kiss that brought his smaller self back to attention.

She patted it and scooted away. “Come to my room tonight at 9pm,” she ordered loudly.

He could only nod, the emotional 360 was doing strange things to his head.

She waved from the door. “Don’t be late and I expect you to come… prepared.”

Sebastian growled as one of the returning servants tried to sneak a pat on the woman’s ass. He needn’t have bothered; her answering kick sent the servant sprawling into a nearby table. The others said nothing as he moaned from the pile of rubble. Clearly the mind-reading vampire could take care of herself. Hopefully she could also take care of him and Sorcha.
