After an hour in the coach, all the excitement Nesta might have had back in Velaris dissipated quickly. The carriage was cold and the driver was the most unfriendly person she'd ever met, and that was surprising, seeing as she was the most unfriendly Nesta had ever met.
The sky was starting to bleed orange, a signal that nighttime was about to fall. They were supposed to travel through the night, but the driver said they needed to stop to swap horses at a local inn.
The driver dropped of the horse and shouted at Nesta: "Stay here! I'm going inside to talk to the owner about changing horses."
Nesta nodded pathetically, and didn't say anything.
This was not what she had envisioned when she had talked about a fresh start.
She leant back against the wall of the carriage and closed her eyes. If she imagined hard enough, then she'd be back in her apartment in the Night Court. Filthy as it may be, it was all Nesta knew.
She was happily imagining herself sleeping soundly in her bed, when a glimmer of light outside the carriage caught her eye.
Nesta leant closer to the window, squinting to see what it was. But there was no more movement in the dense trees. Maybe it had been the driver...
But Nesta glances over her shoulder and saw the driver laughing loudly with the stable man, so what was it?
Then there was another movement, closer to the carriage. Nesta opened the carriage door to investigate, and stepped out into the cold night.
There was nothing there. Nesta narrowed her eyes, trying to spot whatever had caught her attention when a large hand was placed over her mouth.Nesta screamed, but the gloves hand masked the sound. She kicked at her attackers, and managed to catch one of them in the stomach. The man she's kicked keeled over, and fell on his hands and knees into the mud. He was large and burly and Nesta had no intention of still being within his grasp when he had regained his strength.
Nesta stamped hard on the feet of man behind her, and his grip on her mouth loosened, just enough that she could open her mouth wide and bite down on his fingers.
The man stumbled back, sucking on his bloodied digits.
Nesta took this opportunity to run towards the driver and stable man, screaming loudly.
"Help!" She yelled as she ran, getting closer to the two men. She frowned when they didn't move towards her, but moved backwards. They edged towards the door and then it clicked. They were going to lock her outside with her assailants.
"No!" She screamed, but it was too late. The door had clicked shut behind them. "Cowards!" She shouted as she banged on the door.
She turned around, slowly, knowing her captors weren't far behind.
The one she kneed in the stomach approached her and grabbed her neck before she even had time to scream.
"A pretty one, you are." He whispered dangerously, his eyes sliding to her breasts.
Nesta flushed with embarrassment. She averted her eyes from his and turned her head away.
"Look at me." Her attacker growled, grabbing her head and turning it towards his. "I don't like it when-"
The man frowned, his carrot-coloured hair falling into his face. Something was wrong.
It all happened so quickly, Nesta didn't even have time to process what had happened. One moment her captor was standing in front of her, her neck in is fist, and the next he was laying lifeless on the ground beside her, head removed from his shoulders.
Her other attacker was laid next to him, fatally stabbed in the heart.
Nesta screamed silently, her eyes wide with horror.
Who killed him? What had happened?
Nesta sunk to her knees, her hands covering her mouth as sobs racked through her.
The only think Nesta remembered before she fainted was a dark figure walking towards her against the white light of the moon.
