The day of the reaping. The day 2 kids from my district are sentenced to a bloody death. The day I dread most.
It's 3rd year entering. I groan and sit on the ledge of my bed. Might as well get some hunting time in. I tie my hair in the usual ponytail and get dressed. I creep past my parents room knowing they probably want to get some extra sleep, even though they know they can't. But to my surprise my Dad is sitting at the dining table.
"Hey, Martha. Let me guess, hunting?" he said. I nod. "Leave a note for your Mother and let's head out."
We listened for the humming at the fence and crawled under the hole. We grabbed our weapons from a hole under a rock. My Dad had never understood why I liked this one. It had blades on both ends and could separate into two swords.
I stopped walking when I heard rustling in the leaves. "Shh, I think I hear a rabbit." I whispered. I saw it. Coated with brown fur and wide eyes, unaware of it's death. I aim my double-bladed sword and hurled it at the rabbit.
"Great shot." he mumbled.
"Thanks." We made our way to a small cave where we usually just hang out and rest, but how are we supposed to rest today?
"What if you do get picked?" he suddenly blurted out.
I didn't want to lie to him, but it seems like the only thing to keep him from having a break-down. "I won't. But if I did I'd have good chances of surviving."
"Yeah." He checked his pocket watch and realized the reaping was in one hour. "Let's head home."
I get in the tub and scrub the dirt off of me. I wear a pink skirt and white shirt, the only "nice" clothing I have. My Mom ties my hair up in a bun and then we head out.
I'm about to be checked in when I have a panic attack. Negative thoughts flood my mind. I sob while rocking back and forth. My friend Eddie grabs my shoulder and awakens me from my thoughts. "You and I both know you won't be picked." he said.
"But what if I do?"
"Than I'll volunteer to keep you alive."
"That's unnecessary. District twelve doesn't need two good kids to die."
" How do you know?" Just then a Peace Keeper tells us to move along. I get my self together and check in.
After the boring speeches and the overly excited Effie Trinket greets us it's time to reap the names.
"As always, ladies first." she says and walks in her high heels over to the ball. She pulls a paper out and I close my eyes. "Our female tribute is," She unfolds the paper. "Martha Andrews."
WHATTTTTT?! IT'S HER?! Jk, it was clearly her. Hope you enjoyed.
