"Hello?..." I call down the winding staircase, the cracked steps crumbling under my weight. Light, orange and gold, tumbles in and out of the opening at the ending of the dark, misty tunnel. I shrug and follow it, a smell getting stronger with each step. The smell drifted into my nose, burnt flesh, charred bone... it was coming from the light filled room. Why did the air stink?? I take a shaky step into the room and a low growling noise drifts from the back of a barrel. Lights flicker then go out, drowning me in darkness. The sound grows louder, more human-like, it sounded hungry. Shuffling, chain pulling along the dusty, cracked ground. My heart speeds up and I freeze as flashing eyes peer at me from the shadows, the smell of rotting flesh too close. I couldn't breathe. What am I supposed to do???
"Grrryou arrrrre grroingr tro tarst soo grrood." the thing said, gurgling and bubbling each word. It lunged for me, now in the light I could see what it was. Rugged, pale yellow teeth; blank, pure black eyes; torn, dead, grey skin stretched right over bones poking out of the skin like boney, bare mountains on a blank desert. Eyes so soul-less, so hungry looking straight at me. It's mouth gaped open, drool pooling onto the ground. Weapon, I need a weapon! Frantically, I swing my arm, slamming my fist into its ugly face. The thing screeched and broke the lantern above us, sending a shower of hot glass onto my head. I grabbed a shiny shard and gripped it so hard, sticky, red blood slid down my hand and onto the dusty floor. the creature sniffed, its eyes sparkled and it's muscles flexed as it lunged forward yet again. A sound rang out through the day room as it fell onto the shard, it's hands closing around my neck. The creature stopped moving and crashed against me, scratching my neck on the way down to the ground. The sound slowly died with my heart beat and I realized it had been coming from me. A laugh filled the room, light and bell-like. I turned to see dark brown eye fixed on my bloody face.
"Good work, Astilstar. Follow me, I am Father Nathanile, here to give you your final test," he says in his bell-like voice, turning and walking down the tunnel, "Now that you know a little of what we do, do you still wish to become a Sylvainia Knight?" He searches my face for any sign of doubt.
"What was that thing.. in the room with me? It wanted to eat me.." I say looking at my hand, scarlet blood drying slowly on it. He looked at me then sighed...
"It was a Ghyist. A soulless creature with a hunger for what they once were: Human. They eat human organs; the heart, the lungs, anything that could remind them of being human again. Get a bad person, say a murderer, and starve them while injecting black magic, and soon you'll have a Ghyist. You did well, I must say, but your tactics were poor."
"You left me unarmed! What other choice did I have?" I say, digging my nails into my palm. Blood flows over my fingers, down my hand, and into the wood lining the floor. Father Nathanile runs a hand through his dusty, brown hair.
"Yes, Father. I still want to be a Syvainia Knight." I sigh and hand him my bleeding palm.
