Katriona stared at the wall absent mindedly just listening to the wolves calling to one another. Kat had always loved the sound of their melodies entwining throughout the night and she loved the way the darkness made the sounds echo. She was at the Winter Lodge which was where she always stayed during the school holidays.
"Kat are you in here?" Melanie's voice pierced the eerie nature of the calls. Melanie was Kat's best friend since they were 6 and for the first time ever Mel was staying at the Winter Lodge with Kat. The girls had always hoped that they could go together even when they were little they used to imagine what it would be like to go together.
"Yeah Mel. I'm by the window" Kat finally replied. Kat heard Mel walk over and sit down beside Kat on the velvet covered window bench. They sat together for a while and both listened. The good thing about Mel was that she always understood what Kat was thinking as well as she was funny, kind and definately not annoying.
"Kat. Mel. Are you girls in here?" Kat's mother's head popped out from around the door frame.
"It's dinner time girls." Mel and Kat looked at eachother then slowly walked down stairs to the dining hall.
