The Funeral
3 days laterFiona and I are in her bedroom at Chris's house. I am sitting on the bed working on my pantyhose while Fiona stands in front of the mirror, smoothing out her dress.
"You look great Fi." I try to assure her.
Fiona just shrugs and starts blinking rapidly, trying to keep her tears from falling. I go to her and hug her. She starts sobbing as I lead her over to her bed to sit.
"What's wrong Fiona?" Chris appeared in the doorway, looking so tasty in a Dark grey button up, black suit jacket, and black tie. His eyes pop against the dark colors. I swallow nervously and focus my attention back on my best friend.
"I...I can't do it!" She cries.
"Do what?" I ask in a soothing voice.
"We barely saw these people growing up and I'm supposed to just hold it together and play hostess. Look at me, I can't even hold it together now!"
"You don't have to Fiona. You are allowed to be sad." Chris soothes, "They didn't bother to come around after Mom died, that's on them. You don't have to go out of your way to make them comfortable. We just have to put one foot in front of the other and get through the day." Chris said.
He looks tired. I know he hasn't been sleeping well. I look at these two people who have walked right in the front door of my heart and I know I'd do anything for them.
"Let me help. I can be the hostess."
--
Fiona and Chris stood at the entrance to the church multipurpose room, receiving condolences from the guests. During the actual funeral, I had managed to find a bridal suite that Fiona and Chris could wait in. Then I ushered them to their seats just before the service started. That way they could avoid anyone until after.
Now, a distant cousin was talking too long, not so secretly prying for gossip. I step beside her and give her my sweetest smile.
"Would you mind showing me what dish you brought? I want to keep track so Fiona and Chris can properly thank everyone."
This got her attention. I think she didn't want her dish to be confused for someone else's. I do a mental eye roll, then turn to wink at Fiona. Out of the corner of my eye, I catch Chris fighting back a smile. The rest of the time went smoothly. A couple hours later, I was at the food table, starting to clean up, when Chris appeared next to me.
"Meet me in the bridal room." He said, immediately walking away.
I continue what I was doing for another minute or so before slipping out. The room is empty when I enter. I am about to turn around to leave when warm hands grab my waist. I jump before settling when I hear Chris's voice.
"I missed you." He whispers before kissing down my neck.
"I missed you too." I laugh, turning in his arms to give him a proper kiss before resting my head in the crook of his neck.
Chris gently sways us as we stand there, taking comfort in each other. After awhile I ask him how he is doing.
"Okay, I guess. You were amazing out there."
"It's no big deal." I blush at his statement.
"Chris?" Fiona's voice comes from outside of the door. We jump apart just before the door opens.
"What are you both doing in here?" Fiona questions.
"I thought I left my wallet in here, so I just asked Callie to help me look." Thankfully Chris came up with an answer because I am still recovering from the shock of almost getting caught.
