I woke on something soft. I shifted, trying to distinguish where the heck I was just by feel. It felt like I was laying on a thin mattress. I twisted around trying to get comfortable. I just wanted to go back to sleep darnit!

My eyes snapped open when I realized something was moving around behind me. I turned by abnormally long neck to peer at two long crimson-feathered branches behind me. Something in the back of my mind told me that they weren't branches. I ignored it.

And thats when they moved.

I scrabbled to my feet and spread my arms to try and balance myself. I stared wide-eyed at the feathered creatures and I tried to run away. I ran about two steps before I fell into a puddle. I pulled myself out of the muddy water and peered at my reflection.

Instead of seeing my strait jet-black hair and pale green eyes, I was staring at a charred beak of a firebird. The reflection showed that the phoenix's head plummage was a dark crimson. What started me the most was that the firebird had my eyes.

I went to open my mouth to speak my mind, but my eyes widened when the phoenix did the same. I closed my left eye and the phoenix copied my action. That's when everything clicked.

I am the phoenix. The 'feathered branches' where my tails. I gaped at my reflection for a second.

Then I screamed.
