No sooner had I hung up with Emergency when the French doors leading to the library were kicked in. Preparing for capture, I took the battery out of my phone and hid it between the pages of a book, lest the men find my phone and discover that I called for help. As I tried to put my phone back in my pocket, it slid out of my hand, clattering noisily against the floor.

Boots crossed the room.

I buried my face in my hands, curling into a ball in the corner of the storage space.

Tears leaked out of my eyes as I heard the cushion being pulled off the windowseat.

Light spilled down on me when the men opened the door, exposing me.

My heart raced while they laughed in triumph.

Everything disappeared when they brought the butt of a gun down on my head.
