Just a heads up, a bit of foul language in this story.
Enjoy.
"I can't believe this!" I groaned kicking the chair in front of me. "They knew I wanted to go to the movies with Ally tonight! They knew! But no! Instead I have to stay here and take care of Lisa, never mind the fact that she's perfectly capable of looking after herself! Argh!" I was NOT in any way shape or form, in a good mood.
In a way I kind of felt sorry for my cat, Milo, because he always had to listen to it all. My body crashed down onto the single bed in mine and Lisa's room, and in Milo came plopping down next to me, purring loudly. "You're always happy." I complained stroking his fur.
They can't tell me what to do. Sarah wasn't even my real mother, just one of the stupid foster parents the orphanage had picked out for me.
"I barely ever get to go out as it is!" I sighed.
Tonight Ally and I had been planning on going to see the latest Paranormal Activity movie. Neither of us got scared by horrors but we liked laughing at the girls who did, most of the time it was so obvious they were just faking fear but god, it was funny.
Deciding then that my stomach was more comfortable then the bed, Milo switched places so he now sat on top of me. I could still remember the first time I found the cat, he'd been a little kitten, skinny and homeless and if my memory was correct, he hadn't been fed in a long, long time. I nursed him back to health, even gave him food, he hadn't left my side ever since.
My back tensed as I felt the familiar beginnings of one of this cities reoccurring earthquakes. My arms caged their way around Milo as I headed with him over to the doorway of our room.
Despite how often this happens my heart never fails to stop racing. It's scary stuff, that's for sure.
"Matilda!" Lisa screeched my name from the kitchen, obviously terrified. The fact that no matter how many times I asked her to call me Marty and she still went with Matilda was more frustrating then I would have liked to let on.
I felt Milo's claws dig into my arm as I yelled back. "It's fine, it'll be over soon." I managed to reassure her.
I watched helplessly as the only photo I had of my real mother crashed to the floor, the glass shattering. "Damn it." I couldn't help but curse.
Slowly the shaking stopped and everything went back to normal, the only reminder of what had happened was the broken glass on the floor. Lisa ran to our room, tears streaming her cheeks. "Why does this keep happening?" She sobbed.
I wasn't going to pretend to be an expert on the mysteries of planet earth so instead of replying I just gave her a small comforting hug and quick pat on the back. "Are you okay?" I asked.
She nodded and I guessed she was just scared, which was stupid because she was thirteen but hey. "Maybe we should start making tea now?" I knew she would be eager to do that, Lisa loved cooking.

"Matilda we are home!" Sarah called out to me, it was about time.
I looked at the clock, 11 pm, Ally would be just leaving the movies now, pumped after all the excitement. "Good." I grumbled heading to my room, just as there was another knock on the front door.
"Matilda could you get that please?" Rufus, Sarah's husband asked me, voice slurring because of all the alcohol he had no doubt consumed that night.
My feet pivoted and took me over to the front door. "It's a woman!" I yelled as I saw her through the window next to the door. She had long blond hair that had been pulled back into a ponytail and wore a black coat and knee length skirt. "She looks like a cop." I muttered to myself under my breath before opening the door. "Can I help you?" The words forced their way out from between my lips.
