So let's take it a back and tell you what is going on at the academy.
Around 40 minutes earlier before the village slaughter, at the top of the academy ozpin hears news about some witnesses seeing a building or a ship fall from the sky of west of the academy. And so ozpin ordered Qrow to head to the site and investigate this "falling building".
As Qrow headed to this huge ship or building thing he landed on top of a tree looked down to find a village under attack, he flew from one house to another saving as many people he can.
He eventually fought dozen of robots and sliced them to bits and evacuated the survivors. Knowing that this village is gone he was about to leave until he saw this huge robot with weird legs and a head, he thinks he his the leader or something as was preparing to attack him, but saw a pack of Beowolfs.
Wanting to know his enemy he watch up from a tree to see him fight, Qrow was surprised when this huge robot had two more arms, and so he decided that he would let ozpin know about this attack and the leader. Qrow turns into a crow and flew off to let ozpin know from a safe distance.
