Haven squeezed her eyes shut and pulled her sheets tighter over her. I did virtually nothing to block out the screams below her.

It was probably about something stupid, as it had been the night before and the night before that and as far back as she could remember. Haven's parents had always been at each other's throats, and at her throat too.

She remembered their reaction to when she put lilac streaks in her chestnut hair, and again when she added sky blue into the mix. The scars from that day hadn't faded, nor the cuts or bruises. Her ears still rung from the screams.

Haven stood, escaping the confinement of her blankets and flinching as a few swear words were thrown into the mix in the argument below her. She made her way to the window of her tiny attic bedroom, the one thing she enjoyed about her house. Her dark blue eyes roamed the scene above her with fascination, just as she always did when the arguing became to much, the fights too long and the forgivenesses empty.

Why couldn't she live among the stars?

The girl drew a line across the glass with a finger. The sky was were she belonged. Why couldn't anybody understand that? No-one knew how enthralled she felt every time she looked upon the glittering tapestry that was the night sky.

Haven sat on the floor in front of the massive window. It took up an entire wall, whereas the others were empty. Her parents had never let her decorate.

She heard angry footsteps coming upstairs to her room. Haven sighed and waited for the argument to be dragged into her safe space. To her surprise, though, only her mother came in.

"Get dressed," she commanded, brushing a loose strand of blonde hair back into her neat bun. "And not that stupid black shirt again. I want you to look like an actual girl tonight."

She crashed her way out of the room and began yelling at her husband again. Haven stood and began pulling out her chosen outfit for the night. Of course, being a rebellious child, she would have to wear her black shirt.

As Haven buttoned up her signature stripy black dress shirt and straightened out the collar, she couldn't help but feel nervous. This could be the first day of the rest of her life.

Bid day.
