The Village

My village was small, surrounded by a three foot moat that was filled with frogs and a breeding ground for mosquitoes. The building of this moat was a really bad idea as our village was plagued with Malaria. I lived with my family in the northern section of the village. We were a simple group of fishers. Every morning we would wake up at the brink of dawn and head down to the nearby river and fish for hours. Midday we would take our catch back to the village and sell it in the marketplace. However one afternoon during our monotonous life I noticed a girl my age steal cigars and place it in her small satchel. Not wanting to cause a commotion, I followed her quietly and approached her. I grabbed her satchel with a force that almost knocked her off of her feet. She stumbled and tried to regain composure, but not before she saw that I had found out her identity. She was the chief's daughter. Smiling to myself, I realized that I caught her in quite a compromising situation.

I began to blackmail her into doing chores with me. She grew to resent me and the hold I had over her, but the more time I spent with her the more I fell in love with her murky eyes. One day I told her to stop. She was very confused as I had the power to get her to do anything. SHE was afraid about what her father would do if he found out the dishonor she would bring to the family if they found out she was stealing for fun. However after basically granting her freedom, she seemed reluctant to accept it. Before I noticed she placed a small kiss on my lips and ran out of my grasp. I was startled and ran after her, catching up I pulled her into my embrace. From then on, each night I secretly met with her and talked about life, love, and our small village. I could fall myself falling deeper and deeper in love with her, but deep down I knew what we were doing was wrong. Not only would our relationship haunt us but it would bring shame on our whole village.
