"No, that's all wrong."
The words were mumbled under Joe's breath while pacing back and forth between the piano and a guitar in his music room. Between his teeth was a folded wad of paper with strings of lyrics scribbled on the front and back. A pen was tucked behind his left ear; his thick hair billowed over the length of the pen, swallowing it up in the dark jungle of strands. Creativity had struck early that morning and Joe had wasted no time indulging the streak of inspiration. With a furrowed brow, he hunched over the piano and unfolded the paper that he had gripped in his mouth. Joe lifted his eyes and settled his sight on Winter who was curled up in the beanbag chair on the other end of the room. She scrunched up her nose playfully, embracing every single moment that she shared with the handsome man at the piano who returned her silly gesture. Winter's heart swelled at the way he looked at her. His gaze lingered, a faint smile pulling on his cheeks.
"What is it?" Winter leaned forward in the beanbag.
"Just appreciating the view." Joe said with a smirk.
Without another word, he got up from the piano bench and walked over to Winter. He stretched out his arm and offered her his hand. Winter glanced up at him, a questioning expression on her face, before placing her hand in his and rising to her feet. Joe wrapped one arm around her waist and raised their linked hands up as he began to slow dance. In a euphoric state, she rested her head on his shoulder and succumbed to the slow swaying and twirling. Her stomach gave a flip - things were still so fresh between them that she still got the rush of adrenaline with every touch.
"You know, I always thought Nick was the romantic one." Winter mentioned in a casual tone.
"And what made you think that?"
"Teen magazines in 2008."
Joe chuckled softly. "Am I not what you expected after all those years of being a fan?"
"No, you're not what I expected."
There was a pause before Joe continued. "That's not a bad thing, I hope."
"Oh, not a bad thing at all." Lifting her head from his shoulder, Winter met his gaze and marveled at the emotion she saw reflected in his eyes. "You're so much more than what they wrote you out to be. You were always written as the fun-loving, kid-at-heart, energetic, funny one, and you are all of those things. But even more than that, you're thoughtful and compassionate and confident and sensitive and charming. And a romantic."
This time, it was Joe's face that flushed with a mixture of embarrassment and glee. He placed a quick kiss on her temple. "You always see right though me. I couldn't be happier that you're my girl, Winter."
My girl.
Her knees buckled at the weight of his words. There was no use in trying to hide the wide grin on her face, so she opted to bury her face in his shoulder. And just when she though her heart would burst, Joe began to sing softly in her ear.
"I will take your pain and put it on my heart. I won't hesitate, just tell me where to start." Joe lifted his arm and twirled her beneath it. "I thank the oceans for giving me you. You saved me once and now I'll save you too. I won't hesitate.." He pulled back so that they were holding hands and facing one another, emotion coursing through the air like electricity. "...for you."
Winter swallowed, unable to put together a series of words for a sentence. His voice had matured from the young boy that she remembered from back in 2007 on all of her cds. It was smooth but still had that rockstar sound that made it unique to him. After a few speechless seconds, she managed to choke out a response. "Joe..."
