''Good morning Ms. Minaj'' my assistant Gabby said.

''Good morning Gabs"

Being the CEO of the top law firm in New York is kind of stressful. Having the job passed down to me after my mother retired, the last 4 years has been the most stressed I've ever been. Wanting to please my mom and carry her legacy, I try to look at my stress as a blessing, others aren't as fortunate to even be given an opportunity to hold such a big position. As I'm walking to my office, I notice a little girl sitting in the chairs beside my office door. The length of her hair and bright outfit looks familiar.

''Hi mommy.'' Oh, it's my daughter.

With so many cases and past thoughts running through my head this morning, I completely forgot what I even dressed her in this morning.

"Hey baby, how did you get here? How long were you here? WHO let you up??¨ I had so many questions on why my 7 year old daughter is sitting here unsupervised after I dropped her off at school no longer than an hour and a half ago.

''I got in trouble and my teacher called daddy so he had to pick me up. He said he has things to do so he dropped me off here.''

Lord how I wished I had a different baby daddy. Nas isn't the worst father, but he definitely isn't the best. We met in my freshman year of college at a party. We were both drunk and had what was supposed to be a one night stand, but after finding out I was pregnant, I let him know. I tracked him down through people I knew then and prayed to GOD that he wouldn't be a deadbeat. After telling him, he was completely supportive.... the first couple of years of Liyah's life. Since then, he has become forgetful of her needs and put other things and people before her. The only reason I don't fight for full custody is because Liyah loves her dad so much and even with his flaws, he'd kill for her if needed.

Grabbing her hand, we went into my office together. ''So who let you up here and what happened in school in the last hour that caused you to get in trouble.'' I asked while checking my watch for emphasis.

"Gabby, and this white girl said my hair was fake, so I said she has lice, so then she called me blackie, so I slapped her.'' Well, it seems I'm going to have a talk with Gabby on common sense and with the mother of this little girl.

''Liyah, even though she has no business saying that, I taught you never to hit anyone unless they hit you first. Even with ignorant white kids, you have to learn how to keep your anger down, because when it shows, it allows them to label you with the stereotype of 'ghetto and aggressive', and that you are not.''

''I'm sorry mama.'' she says sadly. ''It's okay baby, just stay put for the rest of the day, I have no idea when we will be going home and Grandma can't watch you today.''

"Okay'' she smiled grabbing some work out her book bag her teacher gave her before she left for the day.

Sometimes I work until 11 or 12, which causes me to not be able to spend a lot of time with Liyah. Most of the time, my mother watches her since she is retired now. On days she can't, I ask Nas to, but seeing as he pissed me off with just dropping my child off without asking if I was in or not, I wouldn't be the sweetest person if I saw him today.

As a successful black woman, that's the only thing I dislike about my job, not really being able to physically be there with her. I never want my daughter to grow up saying her mother wasn't present. With that thought lingering at mind, I opened my file cabinet and got started on today's work.
