Camari Devenoux never thought that this would be the day that she would die. But when she saw the headlights coming towards her on the slippery road, she knew that this was it. This was the moment that she would die. Camari didn't think much of it. She accepted that this was her last moments on earth. She would rather die somewhere no one knew her than in her home where her parents were trying to control her. Camari finally felt free, and if that's what would be the last thing that she would feel, then she was okay.

So when the Volkswagen van stopped just inches in front of her, Camari was frozen. Watching her life flash through her eyes, the girl didn't notice that a door on the van had opened and that hand was placed on her shoulder shaking her out of her trance.

If you're wondering how Camari got herself in this situation, then we have to start from the beginning.

When Camari was seven-years-old, she had a tiny yellow bird that she adored so much. She would spend all day talking to it and petting it. She called him Larry and he was her best friend. Camari would spend hours upon hours just talking to him and venting about her day. So when her mother one day told the young girl that she could no longer keep the bird, the seven-year-old was so upset. She didn't understand why she couldn't keep the bird, and when her mother said that it was because he didn't fit in with the image that the family had to portray, Camari was angry. Larry was just a bird and he did no harm to the family. And when her mother left the young girl alone, she picked up the nearest doll and threw it at her mirror making it fall to the ground and shatter in pieces.

Camari was now sixteen and to this day she still hadn't forgotten about Larry. He was the first step in her rebellious phase. After her mother had taken away her bird, Camari swore that she would never let her family decide over her again. Sure, she was forced to do a lot of things that she didn't want to do, but she always fought back. Camari wanted to live her own life where she could decide over herself and make her own decisions.

The girl dreamt about getting away from the mainland. She liked the simpler things. Camari had always dreamt about living in a little cottage by the water where she could watch her husband and child come out of their boat after they had been fishing. That's how Camari wanted to live her life. She didn't care about being rich and living in a fancy house as many others did. She wanted a simple life.

"Camari!"

Pulling the young girl out of her thoughts, Camari looked at her mother on the other side of the kitchen island that she was sitting at. "What?"

"You need to be ready by seven tonight so that we aren't late for the dinner party." Camari groaned. She hated going to those fancy dinner parties that her parents would force her to go to. Everyone that went to those parties only tried to make their families look wealthy and above others.
