Prologue
The screams kept coming, like uncontrollable bursts of fear… I couldn’t move because I was stood frozen to the wet, soggy ground, my eyes wide with the terror bestowed upon me. I didn’t know what I was actually looking at because it was so horribly dark, the rain was bouncing off the ground making my vision slightly blurred but I could make out something creature-like… squatting down, its sharp blood-stained teeth dripping with saliva. There was a really strong stench coming off it and making it worse was the dampness of the forest not to mention the smell coming from the reservoirs. My gaze made contact with blood-red eyes, deep and fierce looking which made me snap out of my frozen state and start to slowly move backward. It began to mimic my movement as it slowly stalked forward, like that of a jungle cat hunting its prey. It let out a small growl which was probably a warning as to what happened next because almost as soon as the growl had finished echoing in the silent night (aside from the rain) it stood on its hind legs and instantly pounced forward. In my cowardice way all I could do was shield myself, by crouching down and covering my eyes so I couldn’t see what was coming. I must have waited for a few minutes before I realised that nothing had happened and I peeped through my fingers to see what was taking so long. After dropping my hands slowly I looked around for the creature but I couldn’t see any sign of it, mainly because I wasn’t in the dark, wet forest anymore but a candle-lit room with a nice cosy fireplace. I stood up cautiously and rubbed down my forearms to try and warm myself as I took a look around. The room was beautifully decorated and had a warm feeling to it; it had a lovely romantic theme with candles and warm romantic colours… I was guessing it was probably a bedroom because there was a large four-poster bed with luxurious sheets and a few pillows. The bedroom furniture was a stunning mahogany oak and there was an oak Grande piano sitting elegantly in the corner near an open bay window. At that moment a figure appeared out of nowhere dressed in a long black, hooded coat and black pants which had me fearing for my life again as I wasn’t sure whether they were a threat. I crouched down again and covered my eyes hoping that I wouldn’t get hurt but I felt my hands being lowered, my eyes meeting some soft silver ones and at that moment I was brought to my feet and the figure spoke, his voice echoed the room even though he spoke quietly;
“I hope you are alright, those creatures seem to find even the most innocent of people.”
I didn’t know why but I just couldn’t find any words to respond to him, I just kept looking into those silver eyes, hypnotized by them.
In the end I just nodded and gave a smile... I really should be asking him who he was and how I had gotten here from a forest so cold and wet… which brought my attention to my white dress, still wet and dirty. I must look so pathetic right now, a sorry sight to those beautiful eyes. Before I could get my bearings together he spoke again in the same tone;
“Did the beast hurt you at all before I arrived?”
I swallowed a huge lump in my throat before I answered in a voice that was weak and croaky I hardly recognised it;
“Erm no, not…”Before I could finish the sentence he took me gently by the shoulders and interrupted softly;
“It frightened you though… I am just sorry I could not get to you sooner.”
I gave him a quizzical look as I asked in confusion;
“Sooner… what do you…?” Again he interrupted me but bringing a gentle hand to caress my cheek;
“It is best not to ask questions right now, all I can do is reassure you that as of now, I will be by your side to protect you.”
It was then that he took my hand and led me to the four-poster… I began to feel slightly uncomfortable because once we had reached it, he lay me down gently smoothing down my hair… then just when I thought he was about to kiss me, he placed something into my hand and kissed my cheek which made everything around me start to disappear and become black.
