Detective: Interview commencing at twelve hundred hours, on the second of January 2017. Sitting here with Mr Jack Riley, aged seventeen. Can you confirm for the tape that this is correct?
Jack: Yes.
Detective: We are here today to discuss the murder of Lily Roads. She was your girlfriend wasn't she?
Jack: Yes.
Detective: Did you love her?
Jack: Yes.
Detective: Were you ever violent towards her?
Jack: No.
Detective: Were you ever controlling towards her?
Jack: No.
Detective: We have been told that you would check her text messages on a daily basis. Is this true?
Jack: Yes.
Detective: So you don't think that that was a controlling thing to do? You feel as though it was normal?
Jack: Yes. My dad does it. He does it to my mum. He does it to my sisters. It is for their own protection.
Detective: Is that what your dad says? That it protects them?
Jack: Yes. So we know what they are doing. Who they are talking to. What they are saying.
Detective: I see. So is that why you did it to Lily? To protect her?
Jack: Yes. She should only have been speaking to me. If she only spoke to me, this wouldn't have happened.
Detective: What do you mean Jack?
Jack: I wouldn't have been angry. I wouldn't be sitting here with you. She wouldn't be dead.
