The next morning Logan accidently wakes me. I pear up at him as he tries to move my head away. He spots my opened eyes, and smiles slightly. “Sorry to wake you,”
“No, it’s alright,”
I grumble to myself and sit up. “Have you thought of a plan yet?” I speak up.
“Well storming the place isn’t really a good idea is it?” He jokes.
I give him a smirk as Jenna walks through the bathroom door, her pony tail lose and frayed. “I know how to get in if that’s the only problem. And where Gray is located,”
Logan nods, “We should go now if anything, they won’t know what hit them,”
We all agree, but before we leave Jenna cleans my wound once more and wraps another bandage around me. Logan makes motions to help me outside. “I’m fine,” I say, but really I feel a little dizzy.
This wound defiantly has a lot of healing to do, maybe when we meet up with Miles, Cole can heal me. We walk to the car and sit in silence as Jenna drives back to the hospital. “So you guys are-”
“Yeah,” Logan and I say at the same time.
“Jinx!” I say back to him.
“You owe me a soda,” He smirks back.
“Nah ah,” I say breaking into sudden laughter.
I see Logan beaming beside me as I chuckle to the point of pain. I force myself not to laugh eventually and we both break out with giggles from the awkwardness. We finally manage to stop as Jenna pulls into the hospital parking lot. All seriousness echoes inside her tiny car. The engine stops and we get out, heading for the side of the building. From there we pace into the stairwell and up five flights. My heart thumps in my chest as adrenalin rushes through my veins. Jenna gazes outside the doorway and pauses for a second before saying the all clear. We race out and stop before Eight’s door. I hesitate, what was I going to say to him? You’re a freak with super powers, along with eight others? Now I know that doesn’t sound right.
I open the entrance slowly and spot Gray sitting up in the hospital bed, a white bandage covering his shoulder. So he’d been hit with a bullet? I take a closer look at him. He’s the guy from the gas station! Knew it! His eyes widen in memory.
I cut him off as the danger feeling jolts through me. I whirl around face a man maybe a little older than me. His light eyes pierce into my soul as he moves with an unexpected quickness. Everything spins so fast that before I have time to blink a knife materializes from his possession and soars toward my skull. Suddenly the world comes to a screeching halt. Everyone around me is frozen, including the knife that would soon become my grave. Gray clings to my wrist and eventually lets go, eyeing me with his deep colored eyes. My breath escapes me when I turn to look at the blade, inches away from my forehead. Gray pulls me away from my captivation and points to my arm. “You are one of the Eight?”
I nod, “How?”
He smiles knowingly. “I am a time traveler; my name is Gray, I am Number Eight,”
“Dari, Number Seven,”
He looks over to my two companions, “Friends of yours?” he says, smiling.
I nod, “That’s Logan, Number One. And Dr. Eden or Jenna,”
He nods continuing his gaze to the man in the door way, his expression unchanged. “Get ready, my friend,” He says in his knowing voice.
I wondered how this kid could sound so different from that gas station three days ago. Something had changed him. Gray closed his eyes and when they opened once more, the world began to spin again. The knife whizzes past my head and lands with a sickening thud against the wall behind me. I summon my power and throw my hand out at the man. He flings backward, landing hard against the wall outside. I hold him there and make motions for my friends to leave. They scuttle past me and stride slowly around the man. His eyes still peer at me, those whitish eyes of his. I follow my friends lead, but am flung backward against the opposite hallway wall. The breath is knocked out of me, and my concentration falters. He comes closer to me, his mental hand holding me in place. How? Is he a N.O.V.A.? Maybe so, but how did he get my powers?
I flinch under his gaze as he approaches me. “Lo-” I try to scream, but he clamps my mouth shut.
So this is what it feels like to be in those peoples’ position. In the corner of my vision, I glimpse my friends unable to move as well. “Who are you?” I manage to spit out.
“That is none of your concern, Seven. I am who I am as you are who you are,” He pauses, “No wonder N.O.V.A. wants you and your friends so badly. You are not trained in your power, but yet you are a challenge to me…and him,”
“Him?”
He punches me with a mental blast. I turn back to face him, warm blood dripping down my nose. My anger sores as one sentence pounds through my brain. You do not mess with me or my friends! He zooms backward, hitting the wall and instantly passing out. I look down at my hands. How did I just do that without even moving my hands? I look up at Logan as he mouths for us to get out of here. I agree and we both head for the stairwell. When we pass the fourth floor a loud explosion sounds. A metal door zooms down the center of the stairwell and crashes when it hits the floor below.
“He’s here,” Gray says darkly.
My heart panics and leaps into my throat as we all run for it. All of us make it to the bottom level, before we were thrown by the man’s mental blast. I hit the pavement, hard. A gun emerges from Logan’s pocket as shoots ring out. I sit up dizzily, seeing the ammunition bounce off the man’s invisible force field like tennis balls in a court. While he’s distracted I glance around, seeing Jenna and Gray standing as she motions him to her car. He nods and touches her hand before they both disappear. Gray materializes next to me and grabs my hand. The world pauses around us as Gray motions for me to move. I stand and hobble over to Jenna’s blue mini cooper. How are we all gonna fit in here? Oh, will manage.
I sit inside as Logan appears next to me and Gray in the passenger seat. Logan smiles, “Dang, Gray!”
He turns back to face him, with a smirk on his face, “I’m glad you like my ability,”
“Guys, but if you don’t mind, we kind of need to get out of here,” I say in a sort of panic.
“Right,” they both say as Jenna positions the car into gear.
The car speeds off, leaving that guy far behind us. “Who was that anyway?”
I can feel the happiness fall from Gray’s face in front of me. “He is called Porter,”
I turn to the window, thinking. Why does this name sound so familiar? Porter, Porter. Where is that name from?! I shake my head, frustrated.
Logan puts an arm around me, a cautious smile on his face. I smile back, my eye sight fading a little. Goodness, why am I so exhausted? My eyes get heavy as I blink and my head begins to droop a little. “You can sleep,” Logan says quietly.
My foggy brain takes a second to comprehend. I agree, laying my head in the crook of his neck. Logan’s forestry sent wafted through my nose as I fall into the calming warmth of darkness.
