Not many people know the history as to why June is considered Pride month.

Gay pride became a thing in 1970 after being called "Gay Power" for the first couple of months.

Though, the full history behind how the LGBTQ community came to be, isn't pretty. For the few uneducated people, here is the history of Gay Pride and the Gay flag.

In the early hours of June 12th, shots were fired at a gay nightclub in Orlando called Pulse. The shooting killed 49 people and wounded 53. To this date is it is the deadliest shooting in American history that is not a school shooting related or war-related.

Now, being gay back in the 80s was considered a crime. Men were arrested for wearing drag and women got the same punishment if they were found wearing less than three pieces of "feminine" clothing. The harassment towards the LGBTQ+ community went on for years until one day in June.

On June 28, 1969, the police arrived at the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in Greenwich Village. Many people say they knew they were coming while others say they showed up with a warrant. Whether they came uninvited or showed up with notice, 13 people arrested; employes, and people who violated the gender-appropriate for clothing status. The suspected cross-dressers were taken into a bathroom by female officers to check their sex(gender).

At one point, an officer had hit a lesbian and forced into a police van while she shouted on onlookers to act; throwing pennies, bottles, cobblestones, and other objects at the police. Within minutes, a full-blown riot broke out that involved 100 people. A few people, including prisoners and Village Voice writer, had barricaded themselves in the bar, which the mob attempted to set fire after breaching the barricade repeatedly.

A year later in 1970 after the whole riot, a committee was formed to commemorate the riots. Though, they didn't know what to call it which called the name "Gay power" to be thrown around until L. Craig Schoonmaker suggested "Gay Pride" which people took. In an Interview in 2015, Schoonmaker said, "People did not have power then; even now, we only have some." he also said this, "but anyone can have pride in themselves, and that would make them happier as people and produce the movement likely to produce change."

Now for the gay flag; the first rainbow flag was made in 1978. The first flag had 8 color strips whether than the 6 color strips we have now. Artist Gilbert Baker, who made the flag, said that each color of the flag represents an aspect of the gay identity. The following is what Gilbert Baker said;

"hot pink for sex, red for life, orange for healing, yellow for sunlight, green for nature, turquoise for art, indigo for harmony and violet for spirit.

The flag now only has 6 colors.

Although it has been many years since the LGBTQ+ community has gotten rights, finally able to legally marry in 2015, many people think that same-sex marriage shouldn't be allowed as it is a sin to them.
