Chapter 1

I waited for awhile after  I heard mommas footsteps in the hall, making sure  she was truly asleep. Opening my door slightly I peeked across the hall to my brothers room. His lights were off, meaning he was done reading. Opening the door a bit further I poked my head out of the room. There was no light coming from under my parents door, so Pappa was done with his prayers and reading the holy book.

Opening  my door just enough to allow me to slip out I entered the hallway, closing my door quietly. Avoiding the squeaky boards in the hallway I, tiptoed past my brothers door, then my parents and down the steps. I zigzaged down the stairs, avoiding the squeaky spots, especially the 10th one, it was the worst.

Making my way through the dark house,  I was careful not to trip, or run into anything. Right as I got to the sliding door, I froze. Up above  me I heard someone walking in the hallway, coming toward the stairs.

"Juliana?" My mother whispered, as she descended the stairs. "Is that you dear?"

"Yes, momma, it's me." I said quickly running to the other side of the counter.

"What are you doing up, it's after 1:00 o'clock?"She questioned. Rounding the corner, from the stairs, and walk down the hall way.

"I was  thirsty, and the water beside my bed was stale." I said smoothly.

"Okay darling, well hurry back to bed. I love you." She said kissing my forehead.

"I love you too momma." I said as she turned and walked away. I got a cup from the cabinet and filled it with water. Hearing the door shut upstairs, I quietly sat the water on the counter. Rounding the counter to the sliding door, I peered out. As usual no one was outside.

I stepped out, onto the patio with my bare foot. Taking one last look around, and seeing no one, I ran the 12 meters to the wall. Reaching the wall I looked for the special brick. This brick had a chunk missing, so it was easier to spot. Sliding the brick out I looked inside the hollowed out side. Sure enough there were Isaac's letters. Taking them, and putting mine in their place, I replaced the brick, turning it around to be sure Isaac could find them.

I got back in my room quickly, since momma heard me there's no need to be quiet. I sat the water on my nightstand, and crossed the room to my closet. Crouching down, I crawled all the way to the left. there was a little compartment in the bottom right corner. You couldn't even see unless you were right there. I opened the small compartment and pulled out the special box. it wasn't the box that was special, but what it contained; two years worth of letters between my sweet Isaac and I.  I closed the compartment and went and sat on my bed and opened the letters.

July 11,1942

My Juliana, my Jewel. I cannot wait until the day when we will meet face to face. This acursed wall cannot seperate us forever. Someday we will be together, and never part. But until that day, I shall continue to fall asleep looking at your picture. Dreaming of our life together. All my love, Isaac.

My Juliana, my joy. I have grave news, that I must share. I over heard my pappa talking to my aunt in America. My father, and Aunt agreed that we shall go and stay with her, until the Arian- Jewish tension subsides here. They said that it is much too dangerous to stay, considering the tender ages of Mary, Johnathan, and Aaron. I am afraid we leave the 22nd of this month. I want to stay, I want to be with you, but my parents are absolute, and  adamant in our staying together. My dear, it is final, we must be apart. I look forward to your letters and keep each and every one. Until next we write, All my love, Isaac.

I read and reread the second letter. Leaving. To America! All of them! I took put my stationary, and quickly scribbled, "Corner Cafe. 7/13/42, 11:30am."

Knowing everyone was asleep, I snuck downstairs. In my haste I was careless and did not check for movement outside. I ran to the wall and put the letter in our brick. Halfway back to the house a loud voice startled me.

"You There! Stop!" a deep male voice boomed. I turned around slowly with my hands slowly raised.
