Seth.
We were best friends before and according to Becky, we sill are, but honestly I know her heart isn't in it as much anymore. It feels like a lost cause at times, she's always trying to distance herself without losing what little we have left. As a result of this futile endeavour, we meet for coffee every Saturday afternoon. Some say it is weird to spend time with an ex and I'm inclined to agree. However, as always she calls at 2."Caffeine and Me, it's a local shop." She tells me and I scrawl down the address, eyebrows furrowing in the process. Her accent is soft, almost airy, charming as per usual.
I realise I haven't said anything for a few minutes so to break the silence, I speak. "You don't even like caffeine that much." I hear a small chuckle, out of the two of us, I always was the more coffee hooked one.
"You can buy me a hot chocolate then." I hear the smile in her voice but then it goes silent, I look up at the ceiling, waiting for someone to break the ever increasing awkward silence. I hold my breath.
"Alright, I'll see you at three." I honestly can't recall how long we were trapped in that bubble of silence. The dial tone takes me by surprise, I manage to slip in a "bye" before she hangs up. I sit confused for a second or two, I haven't paid for her drinks since it ended. Did this mean we were going on a date?
I shook my head, telling myself to stop being so silly. Of course this wasn't a date.⭑⭑⭑
I reach the coffee shop just before three, I have a habit of being late but I ensure to never be late for our Saturdays. The shop was comfortingly warm, usually Becky arrives before me but today I'm first so I take it upon myself to order our drinks. Picking a corner booth near the window, I try to stare out the foggy windows, drawing small patterns. When the bell above the door rings five minutes later I quickly erase them and lock eyes with Rebecca. She's dressed in her usual attire, ripped jeans, a t-shirt of some underground band I've never heard of, doctor martins and a leather jacket. Atop of her orange locks is a beanie, one I believe I gifted her. I try not to pay too much attention to the small details however.
I smile first, waving her over, her face lights up when she sees me. I notice her eyes are bright and her cheeks are pink from the cold but on further inspection I see... worry in her eyes. Believing I'm just overthinking again, I brush it off and greet her. She thanks me for the drink, taking a sip and exhaling happily.
"Oh" She speaks suddenly, putting the mug down. "Let me pay you back." She goes to reach inside her purse but I stop her.
"It's fine, really. It was your idea after all." I remind her and she grins politely, trying to hand me the money still.
"I was kidding, I'm probably not going to drink all this anyways."
I press my lips together. "Well I wasn't kidding, seriously it's nothing." She looks at me for a second but then accepts defeat, putting her money back into her purse. We make small talk, she asks about the progression of the gym I plan to open and I tell her it's near the final stages. She nods. I ask how she's been and she says she's been doing well despite feeling sickness for the past few days. I worry of course and ask if it's anything serious which she immediately denies, putting it down to probably eating something bad which is plausible. She changes the conversation subject rather quickly, asking how Jon and Roman are doing. I say they're doing great and tell her that they miss her, she mentions that she wanted to hang out with all of us again sometime. I tell her that it'd be wonderful, everyone of our estranged group had been thinking the same anyways.
"It would be like old times." She notes, sipping her drink. I do the same, not wanting to comment. We fall into silence and it's like we don't know one another at all.
