Over 200 university hazing deaths have occurred since 1838. In 2017 a boy named Timothy J. Piazza died from hazing at the Beta Theta Pi fraternity at Pennsylvania State. Timothy was 19 years old at the time he worked on becoming an engineer before the tragic incident.

On the night of Feb 2th 2017 he was at his fraternity house where people in the fraternity went to a ritual called the Gauntlet where a pledge drinks a whole bottle of vodka, then drinks beer, also drinks wine from a bag that caused him to overdose and died the next morning. The fraternity was supposed to be an alcohol-free place after the suspension in 2009. The cause of death was from hazing. Later it was revealed Timothy took anti-depressants.

After this incident, it sparked a lot of media attention and went viral ever since even John Quiñones from WWYD (what would you do) made a social experiment about hazing to see what would people do if they see hazing going on and the video is called fraternity, sorority recruits hazed with over 600,000 views.
