Hwarang was known as Flowering Knights, which were an elite warrior group of male youth in Silla. Taehyung knew this, in fact, everyone knew this. They were the knights and warriors loved by people, adored and admired by the people and royal families. Taehyung was always proud of this as it was the greatest the rank of the medal was hung around his neck. He looked up, chest forward, shoulders straight and eyes lowering as people bowing and respecting. Taehyung liked the feeling. Pride wasn’t so likeable in Hwarang morality but Taehyung couldn’t help and feel his shoulders touching the sky. Him being the best ones in Hwarang didn’t help this feeling at all. Though he was too modest to show it out. He kept the pride for when he was holding a sword. He looked up at the sky. He saw the beautiful clouds moving in the sky as the wind hit in his face. He paced fast to reach near the sea. He wanted to draw the scenery of sky and sea with coal. He was good at holding coal as well as holding a sword. With both, he could put on a show worth to be seen. He smiled as he saw some boys running the opposite direction from the sea with a frightened face. They must have seen some unknown sea animals.
He walked closer only to hear familiar sounds. He had been grown up with this sound. The sound of swords crashing each other. Taehyung rushed faster. the sounds weren’t as slow to assume some people are practising. The sounds were loud and rough. He dropped his thin paper and coal bag before pulling out his sword as he saw Ninja clothed people fighting with one person. Taehyung rushed to help the lonely man. He injured some of them with his sharp sword as he ruined the circle surrounding the man. He approached closer and they fought together with the black ninja men. Taehyung was in awe as a person as normal as this man was professional in moving his sword and attacking. So the power of them led to the thieves running away with carrying some injuries out of the scene. Taehyung smirked proudly as he cleaned the dust off his shoulders. He observed the man, placing his sword back to it’s place and grabbing his fishing line. “the lonely fisherman” with a sword with a basket filled with fishes. He must have faced these situations to carry a sword with himself to his job.“you did a good job, Sir Taehyung,” the man said. He knew him? Of course he did. Everyone knew him in their country.
“Thank you. And you better give up on some fishes rather than losing your life” Taehyung advice. He saw the man smiling widely at what he said.
“I can’t earn money if I don’t have any fishes, “ the man said still smiling weirdly.
“you are right, I guess, “ Taehyung said curtly as he paced back to the place his paper and coal bag dropped. He grabbed them and settled on a stone close to where The man's straw chair. There were other rocks and stones but instinctively without any reason he wanted to be close.
“I’m Jin,” the man said. Taehyung repeated Jin severally in his mind attempting to find a connection. He wanted to introduce himself but he already knew.
“you know me “ Taehyung whispered. He was a distinguished Hwarang but this man named Jin knowing him felt different than any people bowing to him.
“Everyone knows you,” Jin said. Taehyung smiled. As he moved his coal against paper mindlessly.
“But I didn’t know you draw” Jin said. Taehyung nodded.
“it’s relaxing for me. Away from people and swords and out of my Hwarang me” Taehyung said. Talking mindlessly and drawing mindlessly. He was opening up and he wondered why so instantly.
“fishing is the same for me... I... I mean my job is relaxing for me” Jin said. Taehyung laughed silently.
“They attacked for these fishes and it’s calming for you?” Taehyung asked. Head down drawing.
“yeah... They are people like them around me all the time. Betraying” Jin mumbled the last part but it was obvious and clear for Taehyung.
“betraying? They were fishers too?” Taehyung asked curiously. Betraying was so nasty compared to robbing.
“Kinda... Yes,” Jin mumbled. The line hung in the water shaking slightly. Jin stood up and waited for the line to move again before pulling it out. One fish was attached to the end of it. Jin turned around and showed the fish to Taehyung before smiling so widely and cheering happily. Taehyung’s coal dropped for the second time that day. He watched Jin's smile but it was like he didn’t see that. Taehyung felt like he reached to the most top edge of joy. Himself. He smiled back without noticing. He stood up and cheered with Jin over one fish without being aware of where he dropped his paper again.
“do you want to try?” Jin asked. Taehyung nodded excitedly when he saw the genuine hope swirling in Jin's eyes. Jin taught him. First started by introducing parts of the fishing hook before teaching him how to attach worms to it. Taehyung was a bit ashamed that a Hwarang like him hated holding worms in his hands. After showing everything to Taehyung, Jin showed how to throw it in the water before handing the fishing line to Taehyung.
Taehyung was nervous as he tried to throw it in the water he was afraid he may mess up and throw the hook to other directions. It was alright but one of the directions was Seokjin's handsome face standing behind him. He felt helpless with his failed attempts.“It’s okay” Jin whispered against his ear. He bent down and his hands moved on Taehyung’s shoulders until his hands wrapped around Taehyung’s. Holding the wooden both of them together. Jin's other hand was on Taehyung's shoulder holding him steady. The warmth surrounded around Taehyung was so blinding that Taehyung didn’t notice when they throw the hook in the water. Jin never let go. His hands left unmoved on Taehyung's while both waited for a fish to eat the worm.
Winks and instants after Taehyung felt the hook getting heavy. He tilted his head. Jin's face was so close to his. He didn’t word a thing but Seokjin nodded and helped him pull out the hook. Taehyung cheered louder than Seokjin did when he saw the fish. Seokjin cheered too still loud and still warm. Taehyung thanked Seokjin for teaching him how to fish, before apologising for taking his time. The time Jin spent to teach Taehyung was equal to catching many fishes he could make money with. Jin glimmered but never answered. Taehyung walked to his paper. He grabbed it and what he saw took his breath away. He had drawn Jin while fishing. He checked Jin to see him busy with his aids. Taehyung was quick to fold the paper and hide it in his clothes.“do you want to company me to sell these fishes?” Seokjin asked. His eyes glowing and Taehyung didn’t want to be delusional but there could be spotted longing and wanting for Taehyung to agree with it. Or maybe, Taehyung longed to be with Jin more. Jin grabbed the basket and his fishing line in one hand before intertwining his pinky finger with Taehyung’s. It was small and almost unnoticeable. Their pinky fingers seeming so fragile but they never broke the string. Taehyung let Jin guide the way. He was confused as they passed the bazaar and walked toward the poor part of the city. He wondered was there any plaza he didn’t know there?
There wasn’t any plaza or bazaar and Taehyung felt lanterns lighting his heart as he saw Jin hanging one fish on every door. Taehyung saw Jin giving coins to children, he saw him helping the ahjummas for carrying their heavy stuff. Taehyung almost doubted. Was Jin one of them? Was he a Hwarang too? Was he a flowering knight? He wondered it all and saw the moon appearing. He spent his day with Jin, fishing and sharing the fishes. It was pitch dark when Jin turned to him in a corner of quiet dusty path handing him the straw basket. Taehyung thought Jin was tired of carrying it but when he checked inside he found the fish he caught. Seokjin kept it for him.“you should taste your first fish yourself,” Jin said standing closely. Taehyung nodded.
“can we eat it together? “ Taehyung asked.
“I should go now. Maybe another time Taehyung” Jin whispered. His name sounded like songs of heaven. He looked up. Their eyes locked.
“Can I kiss you?” Jin asked his eyes wasn’t shining or so, it was a pure lingering for hearing Taehyung accept. Taehyung wetted his bottom lip before moving his head close. Seokjin cupped his face. Their lips met in the middle. Seokjin's warm plush lips on his felt like drinking a glass of old wine in the middle of the snow. Warming and drunkening. It was soft and wet. Taehyung saw it as a peck but he was breathless when they parted. Seokjin still caressing his cheeks.
“Kim Seokjin... My Majesty... I’ve been searching for you” a defined man in the royal guard clothes said. Jin turned to him before turning his gaze toward Taehyung’s. Their pinkies we’re still attached. Seokjin's eyes were full of ambition with the hope of meeting again. He walked away slowly. Taehyung’s eyes lingering on hesitant steps Seokjin taking away from him. He looked up to the moon. His heart was feeling the paper he draw today. His hand was full with the straw basket and his other hand was dusted with Jin's pinky finger.
“Jin... Jin... Jin... Kim Seokjin... King Kim Seokjin, ”
