After my 21st birthday, I'm getting crazy flares of deja vu. It's like reliving a memory or having a recurring dream, an endless sense of nostalgia that heightens at random times. I can't put my finger on it, but with finals rearing around the corner, I'm trying my hardest to not focus on it.
"Ne...Neeee. Oh my gosh, Neoma!"I snap my head towards the sound of my best friend, Jax. Her full name is Jasmine Xiao, but we call her Jax for short. Next to her, looking at me with a mirror face of confusion is Akil. However, his lips are slightly tilted, showing his amusement from my distressed state.
"Huh?"
" Don't 'Huh' me! I've called your name like five times."
"Sorry, sorry. I've just been out of it lately."
She tilts her head slightly, a look of concern gracing her features. Before she can give me another lecture of not stressing myself too hard for finals, Akil comes to my rescue. He wraps an arm around Jax's shoulders and grabs my hand, winking as he does so.
" Come one now guys. We got a long weekend, I say we stop with the stressing and Party!"
"How irresponsible of you Akil!"
I giggle as his face drops and ignore the little backflip my stomach does at his puppy dog eyes.
" Long weekend or not, finals are next week. If I don't study my butt off, I can kiss my scholarship goodbye."
I turn around and start walking backward all while laughing and joking with Jax. I notice her warning too late and crash into someone's chest. All of sudden the intense wave of nostalgia hits again, this time it's almost unbearable, physically affecting my body like never before. I turn around and catch a glimpse of the victim of my clumsiness. He's tall, standing at least a good foot and a half above me. His black shaggy hair sticks to his forehead as if he's been sweating. The earring in his left ear pulls together his whole bad boy vibe. I'm sure I've never met him before, but my mouth moves on its own.
"Elio?"
His eyes widen in surprise but before he can fully react my legs give in. I hear yelling, Jax, and Akil's voices begin to blend into white noise. My vision goes black and the only thing I'm aware of is the warm arms wrapped around me as I slowly sink to the ground. My last thought being, 'Who's Elio?'
