mark trudged through the wet sand from the ocean sea, the sun shining down on the back of his neck, some small droplets of sweat sliding down the back of his neck. his body was sweaty and stiff under the sun.

california heat was no joke, mark decided to not listen to his friends back in korea who told him that the heat in california was usually one of the hottest states yet prettiest and mark definitely had to agree.

"hey beach boy," purred a light voice from in front of him, mark looked up and saw a sunk issued boy, sucking a lollipop as he sat on some rocks and looked down at mark "i havent seen you around here. you new?"

mark only looked at the boy that sat on the rocks. his eyebrows raised up as the tanned boy only looked down at him.

"cat got your tongue?" the boy held back a laugh as mark's face suddenly became blank.

"why are you sitting up there?" suddenly asked mark, the tanned boy's reaction changing from humorous to shocked.

"uh," the boy seemed to be taken back for a few seconds before speaking once again "just a nice view."

the boy hopped down, landing roughly on his bare feet. the boy took the lollipop out of his mouth, smiling at mark.

"you're funny, i like you. the name's haechan."

"i'm mark."

"you're not from around here are you?"

"i could say the same for you. haechan doesn't exactly sound like an english name."

haechan giggled, and nodded at those words. mark's cheeks turning a soft pink, after hearing the cute giggle.

"where are you from?" asked mark, his interest piped up now after hearing the boy's name.

"south korea, born in seoul, moved to jeju island for a while and then moved to california. what about you, beach boy."

"my name's mark, not beach boy. but im
from canada." grumbled mark.

"still calling you beach boy, even if you like it or not!" the boy felt a vibration from
his back pocket and sighed as he opened his phone "but i have to go now," said the other male, "see ya beach boy!"

mark barely got a word out before the boy ran off, leaving mark alone standing next to the rocks that haechan sat on.

mark sighed, and ruffled his brown locks, walking away from the rocks, and back to his parents that had set down a red and white checkered picnic blanket. his father carefully spreading sunscreen on his mother's exposed arms from her sleeveless white dress.

"hey bub," said mark's mother, as she put back on the straw hat back on her raven black hair "how is it?"

"how what..?" murmured mark, as he sat next to his mother, and stretched his legs and arms out.

"the beach, silly!"

"oh, it was fine, i guess..."

"you guess? what happened?" curiously asked his mother, now playing with his hair as his father slathered sun screen on his own exposed arms.

"well i met this boy-"  started off mark.

"was he cute?" interrupted his mother.

"mom! dont ask weird questions!" whined mark, "but..yeah, he was cute."

his mother chuckled but edged on for her son to start his story again.

"okay, well, i met him at those rocks," mark pointed at the rocks he had met the boy "and he introduced himself as haechan, told me he was from seoul and moved here. thats about it."

"oh, haechan? thats a name." earnestly said his mother, her lips puckering.

"i think it's a nickname.." said his father as he swung his arm over his mother's shoulders.

"why would he use a nickname?" mark said with a small and questioning voice.

both his parents shrugged at the question. mark's head suddenly full of questions about the boy. the heat from the sun still making him sweat, and his skin slightly hot.

"when are we going home?" spoke out mark, surprising his parents from the sudden words.

"soon enough." simply said his dad, slightly pissing off mark with the short answer. mark felt a light tap on his back, looking at his left, his mother having a soft smile on her face.

"go look around mark, you never know who you'll meet. this beach could change your whole entire life."

mark rolled his eyes, "as if, there's barely anyone even here."

mark could only see around thirty people near them, other small figures further away from them. mark didn't even wanna try to meet anyone, the previous conversation with the tanned boy already tiring him out.

"even if there's barely anyone, it's still better to meet someone, even if you don't stay friends with them forever. thats a part of life, growing away from those you used to know."

"you got a bit sentimental there," teased mark's father, his mother jabbing a punch to his side.

"shut up." pouted his mother as both him and his father laugh.

"can we go home now?"

"not yet mark!" both his parents said at the exact time as if they were telepathic. mark grumbled as he laid down on the blanket, wanting to go home already.
