Chapter Four
The grand day had finally arrived. The air buzzed with excitement and anticipation as the preparations for Gehenna's 18th birthday celebration reached their peak. The monarch's castle was adorned with the finest decorations, opulent chandeliers casting a warm glow over the grand hall, and sumptuous tapestries draped the walls, depicting scenes of royal grandeur and historical triumphs.
Lyra stood in front of an ornate mirror in her dressing room, her heart pounding with a mixture of nerves and excitement. She couldn't help but worry about Jane's response. What if she decides not to come back? The thought gnawed at her, casting a shadow over the celebration. I've done everything I can, but what if it's not enough? Jane's pain is deep, and I can't blame her for hesitating.
A wave of doubt washed over her. What if I can't change anything? What if I'm destined to follow the same path written in the book?
Suddenly, there was a knock on the door. The head maid, Teresita, entered, followed by a group of maids, each carrying various items for Lyra's preparation. Lyra's eyes widened, and she was momentarily dumbfounded.
"Lady Gehenna," Teresita said with a warm smile, "we've prepared something special for your birthday. I hope it's to your taste."
Lyra stood speechless as Teresita held up a magnificent gown. It was a masterpiece of delicate lace and silk, perfectly balancing sophistication and grace. Lyra's astonishment grew as the maids began their work, assisting her with every detail of her preparation. They expertly styled her hair, adorning it with sparkling jewels that caught the light with every movement. Her makeup was applied with meticulous care, highlighting her natural beauty and making her look every bit the goddess.
When it was time to choose the jewelry, Teresita presented Lyra with a selection that matched her eye color perfectly. The combination of the rare red diamond and the dress made her eyes shine even brighter.
"Thank you, Teresita. And thank you, everyone," Lyra finally said, her voice filled with genuine gratitude. "I couldn't have asked for anything more. You've all made this day so special for me."
As the maids beamed with pride, Lyra felt a warmth she hadn't expected. She glanced at each of them, realizing the care and attention they had shown her.
When did their attitude towards me change? she wondered. Why didn't I notice it before?
A new thought crept into her mind. Maybe... just maybe, I can change my destiny after all. These small acts of kindness—they're proof that change is possible.
As Lyra observed each maid who assisted her, her confidence began to return, little by little. 'I've already come this far. I can do this. I can prove that I'm not the person they think I am. Today is just the beginning.'
Once she was ready, Lyra descended the stairs of her mansion, the butler Antonio announcing her arrival. "Lady Gehenna, the second prince awaits to escort you."
At the bottom of the staircase stood Prince Numeriano, his expression cold and detached, clearly indicating that he was treating this as a task that needed to be done. He offered his arm to Lyra with a practiced ease that suggested duty rather than pleasure.
"Shall we?" he asked, his tone devoid of warmth.
"Thank you, Your Highness," Lyra replied, masking her unease with a graceful smile. She took his arm, and they proceeded to the carriage waiting outside.
The ride to the monarch's castle was filled with silence, each lost in their own thoughts. Lyra couldn't help but feel a mix of excitement and apprehension. This is my chance to prove myself. Despite the prince's cold demeanor, I must stay focused.
