i gasped for air as soon as i opened my eyes. the room was dimly lit. it seemed like it was still dark outside, i wasn't so sure. my heart was beating fast, and i didn't realize i was panting until i heard his voice from across the room.
"love" he called, "are you okay?"
i sat upright and leaned against the headboard. he was still on the desk across the room, hands on the keyboard. i grabbed my phone and checked the time. 3:38 AM. sigh.
"a nightmare." i replied, running my fingers through my hair as i calmed down. "its been a while."
"yeah." he nodded, "you haven't been getting them in a while. do you wanna go back to sleep?"
i looked at him. his hands were still on the keyboard. his glasses resting on his nose bridge, eyebrows slightly furrowed. i noticed he had an extra sweater on this time. if i remember correctly, he has been working since before i went to sleep.
he must've been working non-stop.
"no."
"no?" he slightly raised his eyebrows. "why not?"
i grinned, "because why not?"
"very funny." he replied, with a small smile. "its still early. why don't you go back to sleep?" he leaned on his chair, feet crossed. he slightly tilted his head as he looked at me.
i crossed my arms.
"sure." i said. "but only if you're going to bed too."
i pat the bed, gesturing for him to come over. he chuckled. i thought he was going to say no, but he stood up and quickly joined me. his arms swooped in, immediately giving me extra warmth. i was wide awake a few seconds ago, i thought i couldn't go back to sleep after that nightmare but it seemed like i could fall back asleep any time soon.
he caressed my hair, and i found myself burying my face onto his chest. he smelled so nice, my heart skipped a beat.
"are you wearing perfume?"
"no?" his hands continued caressing my hair. i was getting sleepier by time. "maybe its my sweater."
"oh." i said, closing my eyes.
"this feels nice." i heard him sighed. "i haven't been resting since hours ago. i thought i could speed-run my work till its done but i guess work can wait."
good.
i wanted to reply something smart back, but i found myself falling asleep. i wasn't even sure if i did reply but nonetheless, all i felt was comfort and i didn't want to move an inch. besides, i know i would be able to sleep well this time. somehow, after a nightmare, i'd have a really good sleep when he comforts me.
"sleep tight. i won't let nightmares bother you tonight." he whispered.
maybe he's the one fighting demons in my nightmares. i like to think of it that way.
morning comes and i could hear birds chirping outside the window. he wasn't beside me anymore, and i was hugging a pillow instead of him. i looked around, and that was when i saw him entering the room with a cup of tea in his hand. "oh, good morning." he leaned against the wall. "good sleep?"
i closed my eyes again, and nodded as i rested my head back. "mmm, how did you know?"
"of course i know." he said, sipping his tea. "i figured you must've been tired after the nightmare."
"what, so you made sure i slept through the night with no dreams?" i joked. "its good though, sometimes having dreams feel like my brain wasn't resting at all"
"i know, love." he replied. "it's still an early sunday. do you wanna go back to sleep?"
i hummed, not paying attention to what he was saying as i enjoyed the comfort of our soft bed. it was so good i didn't even want to move an inch.
he placed the cup on the desk and went over to the bed, placing a soft kiss on my forehead. maybe he thinks i was asleep already. i like to pretend i was asleep sometimes. if i get lucky, i'd be able to hear him say things he wouldn't say to me while i'm awake.
"sleep well. i'll make sure no nightmares would bother you this time."
