November 1st 1991:
It was a warm Saturday morning, the morning mama makes a warm homemade breakfast for the four of us. It has always been a tradition since papa was away on the line of duty. For starters, mama always picks the menu and by all means it smells like she has already burnt the waffles downstairs. From there, Cassidy and I are in charge of making lunch and dinner for the rest of the family.
" Addison, Bethany, & Cassidy get your butts on down here it's time to eat. " Mama shouts from the bottom of the stairway.
The three of us opened each of our doors, exchanging glances at each other to see who would be the one to volunteer to set up the table. " Addison, I already set up the table last week, it's your turn! " Cassidy fusses straightening the end of her dress. Before Addison could open her mouth to fight back, I brushed past to the both of them so they can bicker in peace while I set the table up for mama.
" Good God almighty, you do not always have to set the table up Bethany." Mama huffs as she carefully places the food down at the center of the table. " Now mama, you know those two will not stop arguing for anything in the world," I smirked as I the rest of the silverware down neatly by the plates. She laughed walking back into the kitchen to grab the pitcher of orange juice.
Everything grew quiet around the house, which means the girls had finally stopped arguing. Mama and I stared at the staircase as we heard footsteps coming down.
" It took you girls long enough! " Mama placed her hands on her hips. There were looks of guilt on the girls faces as they trugged towards their seats.
After our meal, I helped clear the table off with mama and started the dishes. She did the washing while I did the drying.
" Any letters from papa? " I sighed, drying the plate before carefully placing it in the covert with the others. She exhaled loud enough over the clinking noise from the dishes, which was enough to tell me no." Nothing deary, but, do not forget it is his birthday coming up, you must write to him."
I could not find the right words to respond to that. Ever since papa announced his enlistment with the military, I held a grudge with him all this time because I did not like the idea of a officer showing up at our door to announce that he has been severely injured or worse, dead.
" Knock, Knock, Mrs. Porters! " A young man cried from the outside on our porch. Mama flung her pointer finger over to the door mouthing the words,"go."
I cleared my throat and seen my way to the door while drying my hands off with the towel. " Good morning, Alex! " I greeted him as I pushed the door open. He took his hat off placing it across his chest and bowing his head down." Good morning, Bethany! " he greeted back with a warm gentle smile.
"Alex, well it is such a pleasure to see you! " Mama announces from the kitchen.
" I mean, he is here every morn-ow!." Addison yells. I looked behind me to see Cassidy holding her evil smile as Addison rubs her arm.
" Well, it's always the pleasure to see all of your lovely faces, every morning. " Alex retorts giving Addison a wink which made her blush.
Alex is a close family friend, and both of our fathers are fighting together half way across the world meanwhile, his mom is close with my mom and on top of that he is also my age but, the only child of his family. I always had a small crush on him since I was little, my sisters tease me about it every single time he comes over but, of course mama had to do her part as well on the train of torture Bethany.
Addison props onto the couch crossing one leg over the other. We both make eye contact at each other and I can see the little evil grin on her face. I shook my head aggressively but she declined to get the message instead, she starts laughing out loud dramatically, stopping Alex from his thoughts to turn his attention over to her.
