I was twelve years old when I caught my period. Around that time, I had been having serious cramps, but I just thought that was from Riley always punching me in the stomach. I didn't think much of that.
But one day, I was at the Freeman house. It was a regular Saturday Afternoon. I was sitting on Huey's bed, switching from staring at him write, to playing on my Nintendo DS. Huey never let my parents buy the actual games. He usually got them illegally for me, and I didn't really mind. It was something from Huey, My best friend.. It was a rare treat.
But that day, my life changed forever.
I felt a little wetness in my panties, so I squirmed a bit.
Huey noticed this, and told me to go to the bathroom, and of course, I listened.
When I got there, I checked my panties, and saw dark red splotches. My parents never warned me about things like these, and I was scared. I thought that something was wrong with me. At first, I didn't understand that I caught my period, and that this was normal. So I ran home, and changed into a pair of my fathers black sweatpants, then cried.
I didn't go to school the next day. I told my mother that I was sick. I still hadn't told anyone. I hadn't really seen anyone that day, that is until my mom knocked on my door. She had a pretty box in her hand, of which she put on the foot of my bed. It was adorned with pink ribbons- very appealing to my young eyes.
As much as I didn't want to move, due to the painful cramps, my curiosity got the best of me. Grabbing the box in my two little hands, I carefully took the ribbon off, and took the top off. I looked inside, and my confusion grew.
There, in that box were a box of pads, disposable heating pads, A pink sweater, a couple boxes of chocolate, a bottle of menstrual cramp pills, and even a romance novel. Lastly, a note from Huey, explaining what to do with the stuff, and what was happening to me and my body.
And that was the day that I had realized that I loved Huey Freeman.
