Tiny snowflakes, unique in shapes and sizes, stuck upon the foggy glass window in Karoll’s room. Outside, it looked as if Mother Nature decided to cover everything in a blanket of snow, making the landscape breathtakingly beautiful and surely serene.

A smile curved on Karoll’s lips as she paced around her somewhat junky bedroom in search of her red scarf. This was going to be one interesting Christmas Eve for her. The friends she made from college, along with herself, all decided to do a Secret Santa this year before departing from each other for winter break. It wasn’t something they all agreed on at first, some saying that them doing such a thing was “unnecessary” and kind of “childish” but they finally agreed. Who would pass up on getting a free gift?

“Karoll!” Her best friend Alyson shouted from downstairs. “If you don’t get your ass down here in a minute, I’m leaving you for real this time!”

Karoll laughed at Alyson’s annoyance. There was nothing funnier than getting her friend annoyed intentionally. Karoll quickly rummaged through her scattered sweaters on her closet shelf until her eyes spotted a red piece of fabric dangling. Snatching it off the shelf and grasping it in her left hand, she neatly secured the scarf around her neck before running down the stairs.

Alyson averted her gaze from the TV when Karoll heard running down the stairs. She stood up from the couch and threw her hands up in the air as if to say finally while grabbing her car keys. She glanced over at Karoll tossing her phone, lip-gloss, her glasses, and other various contents inside of her oversized beige tote before joining her at the front door.

“Well, at least all the time you spent upstairs didn’t go to waste,” Alyson said while closing the door behind her. She always loved the way Karoll styled her clothes together. “You look pretty.”

 “Thanks, Aly.”

They both spend about three minutes exiting their apartment building beside each other chatting about random things before reaching Alyson’s car parked on the street outside. It took them about thirty hours and a thousand song changes for them to settle upon something they both enjoyed listening to.

“Why do you always wait to the last minute to do things?” Alyson asked, pressing down on the brakes as they neared a red light. “You do know that the party is tonight . . . Right?”

Karoll glared at her and she laughed aloud. “Oh shush. I’ve just been so busy lately,” Karoll said. “And I never really had the chance to drive up to Macy’s to buy the gift.”

“Whose name did you get?” Alyson asked, even though she’s almost positive her friend wouldn’t budge.

“I’m not telling you.”

And there it is.

“Come on, Karoll!” Alyson whined. “You know how much I hate when you keep secrets from me!”

It was true. Alyson hated secrets. And Karoll loved keeping them from her. It was beyond hilarious watching and hearing how agitated Alyson got to her. And even though it made her a bad friend of it, she purposely did it every single time when awarded the opportunity.

“Are you that eager to know?” Karoll asked. A grin found its way on her lips. “We’re literally going to be exchanging gifts five hours from now.”

“I know! But still!” Alyson groaned while entering the Macy’s parking lot. “I already told you who I had.”

“That’s only because you wanted to tell me,” Karoll pointed out.
