My father had frozen all my mother's bank accounts, she luckily had one credit card that wasn't maxed out. We ended up staying a couple of long days in a shitty motel, but my mom kept us from school so my brother and I got to just sit and watch TV all day. While she went out and started looking for a place to rent and to apply for anywhere hiring. The bathroom floors were moldy in the corners, and you could hear every whisper through the paper-thin walls. The atmosphere in the motel was disturbing, just as you know many illegal things were in the happening. The man that worked at the front desk was skin and bones and had an extremely creepy thick black mustache. Luckily we didn't have to stay there long. My mother was able to find a place that was rented out by my aunt's boss, it was a two-bedroom, definitely a huge step up from the motel. Though, It was the most average looking house I've ever seen, it was a dull egg white color. Two windows in the front, two in the back. Everything seemed perfectly symmetrical, someone could stand naked on the small front porch and people would just drive by because they won't even acknowledge the house itself, it just blended in. But truthfully that's all we really needed right now, just to blend in. My little brother was excited to have his own room, "I can't wait to have my friends over momma" said Bean. " It may be a while before you can have a sleepover, sweetheart." sympathized my mother. What she meant was it may be a while before we even have a bed to sleep in ourselves, let alone friends. We weren't really bothered by that, we were so excited to get away from the constant drama. The noise in the town was exciting for my brother and me. We had always lived out of town, our driveway was a mile-long road through the deep woods. We felt like we had a new set of freedom, not that the town was super big. But for once in our lives, we could actually walk to school, the grocery store, the park, etc. The walk to my high school was only 5 minutes, and If I left early enough in the morning I didn't have to interact with anyone else walking to school. After school was let out and all the busses would leave, they would finally let the kids walk home. It was like a herd of buffalo, everyone all sweaty because our cheap-ass school only air-conditioned the principal's office. By the end of the day, the whole school smelled like dirty ass socks. I would always wait in the bathroom, freshen up my make up, then walk out. A two-minute wait saved me from lots of unbearable smells. One day, in particular, the first week walking home, I wasn't the only one waiting behind. I heard a teacher discipline a boy in the lobby, I had seen around twice before. " You better start keeping your noes clean, George. You keep following this path and you will be just like your dad." said the teacher. He apologized to the teacher " I know, I'm sorry, I swear this is the last time." Then, in the exact moment, he went to turn out to the doors, we locked eyes, and he winked. Within those five seconds, He gave a faint smirk that melted my insides and then shuffled out the door. I didn't understand, was it a prank? He was one of the cool boys, I just always kept to myself. Outside he had a car waiting for him, full of some hyped-up older kids, laughing and yelling his name, as fast as he jumped in the front seat, was as fast as they sped away. I walked home that day, daydreaming and not thinking about anything but him. It felt nice.
