Morgan sat at her desk, sipping a cup of Witches Brew coffee. She perused a small stack of papers that she held in her hand. She didn't want to do this, but every witch needs a familiar, or that's what the rest of her coven told her. Yes, she was a witch, but she hated that term. She preferred magic user, even though that term made her feel like an addict, it didn't have the stigma of the term witch. The coven had given her all the names of familiars that were in the market for a new job. Nothing like the present to get the interviews underway.
"Jantar Mantar," Morgan said.
A puff of smoke, then a hyena with green spots appeared in front of her, a toothy grin on its face. It sat staring at her with eyes that glowed a greenish hue. Morgan looked over the first page of her paperwork.
"Hello, Picatrix. You're the first on my list for becoming my familiar," Morgan said. "Can you tell me why you would make a good familiar?"
"Where to start?" Picatrix said in a high-pitched voice, then laughed maniacally. "First and for most, I'm a hyena, what better animal for a familiar could there be? I can steal without detection, I'm very strong, and I will give you your space when you need it."
"Hm. Can you tell jokes?"
"Of course, and laugh at them as well," Picatrix giggled.
"Thank you for your time. I will summon you once more if I choose you. Jadu Mantar!"
With that, Picatrix vanished in a waft of green smoke leaving behind the smell of sulfur. Morgan thought for a moment, then marked a maybe on the page with Picatrix information on it. She flipped to the next page and looked it over for a moment. "This next one looks interesting," she thought.
"Ajji Majji!"
A large black cat with blazing red eyes and a fiery aura around the tips of its tail appeared. It sat down, licking its paw to clean itself. Morgan let out a slight giggle, even as a magical being it had the behaviors of a normal cat. She looked over the page once more, then at the cat.
"Your name is Grimoire?" Morgan asked.
"Indeed, it is, human," Grimoire purred. "How may I be of assistance?"
"My name is Morgan, and I am interviewing for a familiar. What can you tell me about yourself that isn't in this document?"
"Plenty, seeing as a familiar's full power is never given to the witch he is employed by. Other than being able to breathe fire, levitate, and hypnotize people, I also make an excellent cup of tea."
"I do love tea," Morgan smirked.
"I would be pleased to make you some if you like," Grimoire replied.
"Not now, thank you. I'll let you know if I choose you, thank you for your time. Majii Ajji."
The cat vanished in a puff of smoke. This was going to be harder than Morgan thought. Two very good familiars already to choose from and she still had a couple more to go. She felt a little overwhelmed with the choice she would have to make, for when you summon a familiar it's with you until your death. She asked herself, would she be able to deal with that? After a few moments she thought, "If Alice could deal with the Cheshire Cat popping in unannounced, I can deal with my familiar doing it as well." Morgan looked down at the papers and flipped to the next page. "This one should be interesting," she thought to herself.
"Abracadabra!"
Glitter fell from the middle of nowhere. In the center of the glitter, a pink unicorn with a rainbow tail and glittering blue horn appeared. Morgan giggled because if she looked at the unicorn a certain way it almost looked like the unicorn was pooping rainbow instead if it being its tail. She composed herself and started the interview.
"Erana, how are you today?" Morgan asked.
"Very fine, thank you. I'm so happy I'm getting this opportunity," Erana answered.
"Great! So, it says here that you control lightning. Can you demonstrate that for me?"
"I sure can. It's probably better that we step outside though."
Morgan stood and motioned for Erana to exit the house. Morgan muttered a quick spell so that no one would see them or what was to transpire during the demonstration, then followed Erana out. They walked towards the center of the backyard. Morgan put her hand up signify that this was where she wanted Erana.
"See that bush over there," Morgan pointed.
"Yes," Erana answered.
"Demonstrate away, then."
Erana shook her head in acknowledgment. She whipped her mane, reared up, then came down with a thud. Instantly there was a loud crack that split the sky, a flash of lightning, and then smell of ozone. Morgan's jaw hit the ground. Grimoire could breathe fire, and that was all well and good, but Erana's ability trumped that by a hundred.
"Erana, that was amazing!" Morgan shouted.
"Why, thank you," Erana curtsied.
"I have one more interview to do. If I choose you, I'll summon you again. Alakazam!"
Morgan walked inside and flipped to the last page. She felt it was a moot point seeing as she had made her decision, but she had to at least interview the last one. She glazed over the bio. "Here we go," she thought.
"Klaatu Barada Nikto!"
A green fog permeated the room followed by the smell of sulfur. A human skeleton with glowing red eyes appeared in front of Morgan. This was not the description that was given on the paper she had. She looked down at it one more time. There had to be a mistake.
"Are you Raven?" Morgan asked.
"No! You may call me Asmodeus."
"I'm sorry, Asmodeus, there must be some mistake. I was trying to summon Raven, I'll just send you back on your way."
Asmodeus ripped the papers from Morgan's hand, then tore them to shreds. He grabbed her by the throat and lifted her into the air. Morgan hacked and gagged from the choking as well as the smell coming off this being.
"Now that you have summoned the great archdemon, Asmodeus, you will suffer along with the rest of this world!"
Morgan gasped, then tried to mutter a word but nothing came out. Asmodeus pulled her close to where his ear would be if he had one.
"I'm sorry, what was that?" he questioned.
"Abracadabra," Morgan mustered.
Once again Erana appeared. She saw the scene that laid in front of her, a grotesque creature gripping Morgan by the throat. She quickly jumped into action running head first towards the thing, goring it with her horn, and it released it's hold on Morgan. Erana tossed the monstrosity toward the bush she had struck with lightning earlier, then did the same to Asmodeus. The skeleton turned to ash, then fell to the ground. Erana rushed to Morgan's side.
"Are you alright?" Erana asked gently.
"I am now, thanks to you. If you'd accept, I offer you a place at my side as my familiar," Morgan said.
"Morgan, I think this is the start of a beautiful business friendship."
"Indeed it is, Erana, indeed it is."
