I steadily rose through the murky water while trying everything I possibly could to sink back down.
My heart was pumping, eyes were stinging and my muscles were aching from the strain but I couldn't give up.
I was forcing my body way past its limits, causing me to see blacks spots covering my surroundings, I knew any second I would lose consciousness.
I couldn't stop, I had to keep trying, I had to go back down, I couldn't leave her.
My head burst through the surface just as everything went dark.
I jolted awake, sitting straight up before slouching over and trying to slow down my racing heart. I could feel my hair sticking to my neck as sweat dripped off my face.
"It was just a dream," I whispered to myself.
I rubbed my hands over my face removing the sleep from my eyes as I groaned. I had been having the exact same nightmare almost every night for the past month but I still hadn't got used to it and I didn't think I ever would. There was just something off about them, they always seemed too real, too detailed and vivid to be a dream.
After bringing my hands away from my face I let my eyes slowly scan the messy room passing over the unopened boxes still lying on the ground along with all my dirty clothes that I hadn't bothered to pick up.
I looked down and saw school books surrounding me on my twin-sized bed and groaned again before I not so gracefully slid out from underneath the covers and started gathering my books.
I had fallen asleep while I was trying to finish off my homework, I knew sitting on my bed was going to be the death of me. I reached for my phone on the bedside table and turned it on before cursing, there was only eight minutes before my first class started.
Quickly, I rushed into the bathroom and jumped into the shower.
Five minutes later I was running around in my towel searching for clothes, soon I spotted a shirt and a pair of shorts that looked relatively clean and threw them on. It wasn't a hygienic choice but I was in a rush.
I stuffed my books into my bag and slung it over my shoulder before slamming open my door and sprinting down the hall not bothering to shut it behind me.
I ran out of the dorm section of the school acknowledging how empty the hallways were as I made my way to my first class while grappling my dark brown hair into a ponytail.
I was almost at the door when the deafening sound of the first bell blasted throughout the school.
Now I was officially late, again.
A few profanities entered my brain as I pushed the door open and watched the whole room go silent as everyone turned to stare at me.
"Nice of you to join us, Miss Scott." Mr Woods said, "I see you almost made it to class on time today."
I saw some of my classmates snicker and I gave them a glare before returning my attention to the teacher in front of me to see him wearing a button-up shirt with a black tie and long grey pants with dark brown lace-up shoes. I looked up at his face to see it in its usual position when he looked at me.
Narrowed light green eyes, frowning bushy eyebrows and pressed lips all working together to form a scowl.
He actually looked kind of intimidating especially with his height being over 6ft but there was no way I was going to give him the satisfaction of scaring me.
"You should know me by now sir," I said shrugging.
"I probably would if you ever came on time," I heard him mutter before shaking his head, "So, what's your excuse this time?"
