"(Y/n)? Hey, (y/n)!" You groaned upon hearing the sound of your name being called. Your (e/c) eyes peeled open as you began waking up, automatically stretching. You exhaled deeply, feeling content, quietly smacking your lips.
"Yeah? What's up," you asked, rubbing your right eye.
"Your mom sent me in here to wake you and Jasper up. But...I'll leave the Jasper part to you," your best friend said with a chuckle. You furrowed your eyebrows, blinking for a moment. You glanced to your left and right, realizing that Jasper wasn't next to you. You then looked down, seeing the gem with her head on your stomach and arms wrapped securely around your waist. Why do we always end up like this?! You blushed slightly, sitting up a little in the bed. Jasper growled in her sleep, her arms flexing before relaxing again after turning her head to the right. "That noise...oof," Kehlani said, fanning herself. You chuckled quietly, picking your phone up from the pillow beside you. 8:21 AM. "Say, when did you come back into the room last night?"
"Around four," you answered with a shrug, placing your phone back down beside you. Kehlani nodded slowly, kneeling down beside the bed. She rested her chin on the back of her hands, staring up at you. "What," you asked with a giggle, absentmindedly rubbing Jasper's head.
"Nothing, I was—I was just thinking. You and Jasper are pretty close...even for only knowing each other for a little over a month. Like, you two always have so much to talk about! What's she interested in? Like hobbies and stuff?"
"Well, she likes training and working out. She also likes horror films, and she's recently taken up reading. Maybe...doing hair too? I don't know," you said with a light sigh. Now that I think about it...I don't really even know what Jasper has an interest in! Everything I listed is either something we have in common or something I taught her about.
"You seem just as lost as I am," Kehlani said with a light laugh. You chuckled, watching your fingers disappear and reappear in Jasper's thick white hair. "What about her past then? Anything cool there?"
"Well...yes. I won't tell you everything because it isn't my business to tell in the first place, but I know she was a soldier. A commander, specifically. That's why I call her Captain sometimes. Even though she hates when I do it," you said, giggling.
"Yeah, why is that?" You shrugged, looking down at the gem.
"I honestly don't know. I've asked her before, but she wouldn't tell me."
"Hm...weird."
"Yeah...what made you ask about her interests all of a sudden?"
"U-Uh...no reason. I just got curious, that's all." You raised an eyebrow, deciding not to pry anymore. "Anyway, you should get up and bring Jasper with you. Your mom is making breakfast." You nodded, watching as Kehlani walked out of the room, closing the door behind her.
"Is she gone," Jasper groaned from your lap, stretching. Your eyes widened slightly, and you sat up straight quickly, causing the gem to roll off of your legs.
"You've been up this whole time?!"
"If you're worried about me eavesdropping on your little conversation, I only heard the end of it. About breakfast." You exhaled slowly, swinging your legs over the edge of the bed.
"Oh...okay."
"Are you...okay?" You gave Jasper a soft smile, nodding once.
"Yeah, I'm okay. It's just—have you noticed that Kehlani has been acting really weird around you?"
"More weird than usual," Jasper asked, chuckling as she stood up from the bed. She was wearing a pair of red shorts and a black t-shirt. The gem stretched again, yawning. You chewed the inside of your cheek in thought, fiddling with the ends of your (h/c) hair. Jasper glanced at you, squatting down so that the two of you were face to face. "Hey," she said, putting her knuckle under your chin and tilting your head up. "Let me know what's on your mind." You knew that you couldn't tell her what you were really thinking, so you decided on the next best thought.
"Haven't you noticed that Kehlani has been acting more...nervous around you? That's a complete three-sixty from the way she was when I first introduced her. She was all confident, and flirty and just...trying really hard to get your attention, ya know? I'm just curious as to what changed. And a little bit concerned too."
"Do you want me to find out for you," Jasper asked with a smirk.
"H-How're you going to do that?" The gem shrugged, standing up and pulling you with her.
"I'll just ask her. But I do have to agree with you, though. Her whole attitude changed from when I first met her to now. Towards me, obviously, but I'm more curious about the change towards you."
"Why do you say that? What changes toward me," you asked, your eyebrow raised.
"C'mon. You have to admit that she was being pretty passive-aggressive towards you, but now she's super nice to where it's kinda creepy." You knew Jasper was right, but you still didn't really want to believe it. "She's acting that way for a reason, Shortcake, and if it's bothering you, I'll figure out why." You giggled, looking up at Jasper again.
"'Shortcake' my new nickname now?" The gem blushed, looking away from you as she crossed her arms.
"I-It kind of slipped out...don't expect to be called that all the time!" You gave a warm smile, shaking your head silently. Yeah, I know. You always switch it up, you thought.
"Come on, ya big softy. I'm hungry," you said, enclosing your hand around a couple of Jasper's fingers before pulling her out of the room with you.
"I'm not soft," she mumbled, dragging her feet behind you.
"I strongly believe that my mom will say otherwise," you replied with a giggle.
"Say otherwise to what," your mom asked as you entered the kitchen with Jasper.
"That Jasper isn't soft." Your mom laughed giddily, putting two plates down on the kitchen island.
"Jasper is an absolute softy. Just look at her", she exclaimed, smushing the gem's cheeks together after she had taken a seat on the barstool next to yours. Jasper groaned, furrowing her eyebrows.
"I'm not soft! See, look," she protested, peeling your mom's hands from her face and placing them on her bicep. She flexed, earning a quiet gasp and then a giggle from your mom as she squeezed her arm, feeling up to her shoulder.
"That's very nice, Jasper, but I didn't mean physically. I was talking about in here," your mom said softly, pointing to Jasper's chest where her heart would be. The gem sighed, seemingly disappointed. You laugh quietly, digging into your omelet and toast. "Eat up, girls! While Storm and I go and get dressed."
"You aren't going to eat? And, wait...where is Storm?" Your mom bent down behind the island, popping back up with the grey tabby kitten.
"She's been up with me since about six. I went to turn the A/C back up to the regular temperature when I heard her whining from the room. You left the poor thing in her cage! So I freed her and fed her, and then we got to know each other. And I must say, she's a real queen...like me." You chuckled, reaching out to pet the kitten behind her ears. She purred, closing her eyes.
"Sorry, baby...I must have forgotten to let you out since Jasper was being an asshole as usual."
"I wasn't being an asshole. Not my fault you chose to sleep on the couch for part of the night", she answered with her mouth full. Jasper swallowed, pointing her fork at you. "Then you got all cold and came running back to me."
"You don't know what you're talking about, dipshit. I just—wait, Ma, did you say something about changing the A/C back?"
"Okay, time for Mommy to leave," your mom said before disappearing into the hallway. You looked at Jasper, the confusion evident in your face. The gem shrugged, and you sighed, shaking your head.
"What was that all about," Kehlani asked from the dining room. You shrugged, and so did Millie, causing you and your best friend to laugh.
