Friday at the end of school

"Hey, Justin," I say quietly as the bell for our last class rings. "We need to talk. Are your parents going to be home?" He shakes his head.

"No, they won't get home until Sunday," he says.

"Ok, I'll come over around 6. Is that alright?" I ask nervously.

"Yeah," he says and walks away.

"What was that about?" Lizzie asks when I reach my locker.

"I'm going to attempt to make up with Justin today," I say with a shrug.

"Ok," she says and then her face lights up. "So, today, Mike and I blah blah blah," she says-or that's what I hear because I've totally tuned her out. I'm not even at his house and I'm already thinking about him. Lizzie doesn't notice and talks the entire way home. I drop her off and go home.

"Hey Mom," I greet when I walk in.

"Hey, Alec. I made you some popcorn as an afternoon snack. What are your plans for this weekend?" she asks with a pleasant smile on her face.

"Well, I'm going to Justin's at around 6 and then....I don't know. I guess I'll go from there. I might stay over at Justin's tonight? Is that alright?" I ask on the way to my room.

"Of course, just use protection," she says after me. I freeze in my tracks.

"What did you just say?" I ask my mom in mortification.

"Nothing, Sweetie. Just be safe," she says with a smile. I had planned on telling her that I'm gay, but now I didn't even have to come out. I have to admit, it was nice that my mom hadn't assumed anything until she evidently heard me and Milly talking. At least, I assumed that that's when she found out.

I read a book and set an alarm for 5:50 so that I have enough time to get to Justin's house.

Some time later

Time to go, I think and get in my car to leave. I fiddle with my hands nervously and knock on Justin's door. He opens it and I follow him to his room. I can tell that he's been stressed lately because his room is a little messy. It isn't as bad as mine, but still.

"What's wrong?" I ask him immediately. He just looks at me.

"What?" he asks.

"Your room," I say and gesture to the space around me. "You usually keep it clean. So, what's wrong?"

"It's just my stepdad. There's something off about him. I guess I never realized it, but their relationship is...weird," he admits.

"I noticed that at dinner," I say.
