Professor Thomson handed out the assignment sheets. "Magic has been classified into originally thirteen different types. This number has fluctuated over the years as wizards and witches pushed their magic and imaginations to their limits. Their discoveries have added new classifications. Magic is continuously adapting and changing.
"Your job for this assignment is to unlock the history on your specialization. Find out who the first wizards were to attempt this style, when this was, where they gathered their inspiration. Each of you will write an essay, then as groups you will create a visual that can be used to further explain each specialization to the class."
Nathan looked around the room as other students quickly formed their groups and discussed ideas. Nathan was alone, yet again.
As students began to file out of the classroom, Nathan hung back. "Mr. Thomson, there isn't much about necromancers in any of the textbooks at the library, just a few brief descriptions here and there. I don't think I'll be able to complete the project," Nathan explained.
Professor Thomson glanced about the now empty classroom. "Can you keep a secret?"
Nathan nodded.
"Good. Follow me." Professor Thomson opened the door to his office and closed it behind Nathan. It was a small room. Papers were stacked on top of the desk waiting to be graded. A bookshelf lined one wall, floor to ceiling, with thick, dusty volumes. His eyes scanned the bookshelf before he pushed books back into the shelf, seemingly at random. Fifteen books later and the middle section swung open to reveal a hidden room. "Come along."
Professor Thomson lit the torches around the room with a flick of his wrist. "This is my private collection of books that have been banned, burned, or forgotten about. While some people think burning books can safeguard the masses, I think these books hold valuable knowledge that should be protected at all costs."
He sat down at the computer as it booted up. Professor Thomson typed 'Necromancers' into the search bar of the catalog. Several hits popped up. When he clicked the 'gather all' button, books literally began flying off the shelves to sit on a neat pile next to the computer.
"This should help you." Professor Thomson waved his hands over the pile of books causing them to glow briefly. "As a safeguard, to anyone else, these books will appear as standard history books. Knowledge, especially ideas, can be a dangerous thing."
"Thank you."
Professor Thomson nodded before heading back to his desk to grade some papers.
Nathan turned back to the computer. He searched "Simon" in the database. A million hits popped up. He typed "Simon necromancer" and this time a few hits popped up. He clicked 'gather all' just like Professor Thomson had.
After putting all the books in his backpack, Nathan stopped by Professor Thomson's desk.
Professor Thomson looked up, noticing Nathan. "Let me know if you have any more trouble."
"I will. Thank you again!"
