The soft rain pattered on the roof of the old church, some of the drops finding their way through the cracks of the waterlogged roof and falling on the clergy as they walked silently through the halls. Despite the church being a bit worse for wear and extremely old, people still came from miles around to hear the sermons of the Masked Priest. It was a well known fact that the priest bore the Mark of The Angels, which was given to only the holiest of individuals at birth. That was why he wore the mask, to hide his mark of purity from the eyes of people who have committed sin. Out of respect for someone so holy, churchgoers and other clergy only referred to him as Masked, or The Masked One, in order to preserve his God given name.
It was a rainy Saturday afternoon, and everyone who lived on the church grounds was getting ready for tomorrow morning's service. More and more people had been showing up to hear the words of the masked priest, so extra seating was being added to accommodate them. The masked priest in question was in his room, reading his bible in preparation for the morning service. The clergy lodging was a separate building from the church itself, but it was only a short walk from the building to the church, and the building was still on land owned by the church.
Masked was seated at the desk in the corner of his room, bible in hand. As he was reading, he felt his face begin to ache. The mark that the angels had left on his face felt...tingly. It was the type of feeling you get when your leg goes numb from sitting on it for too long, and Masked had never experienced this feeling from his mark before. Something was very wrong. He rose from his desk, looking around his room. There was nothing unusual, so he decided to check the church. He put on his cassock, as well as his now-famous mask. He exited his room and looked down the hall. Nothing wrong there, either. As he reached the main exit of the lodging, he looked around. There was no sign of anyone there. "They must all be preparing the church for tomorrow," he thought to himself, as he left the clergy building.
During his short walk to the church, he breathed in the outside air, the smell of fresh rain invading his senses. The rain had slowed since the morning, but a few raindrops still fell from the sky, clinging to the priest's clothes. When he reached the church, he felt relief wash over him. "Nothing looks to be wrong...yet." He opens the door, and is met with the sounds of quiet chatter and shuffling coming from the main room. Two nuns are standing in front of a small broom closet on the far side of the room, whispering to each other. As Masked approaches them, their conversation stops as they stare at him in awe. Masked clears his throat, awakening the two nuns from their trance.
"What seems to be the issue here," the masked priest spoke, his voice monotone. "We think there might be an animal stuck in there, but we're too afraid to open it," one of the nuns saya, staring at the floor in embarrassment. As if on cue, the sound of scratching can be heard from the other side of the broom closet door. The nuns jump, backing away slightly. Masked steps forward, grabbing the door knob and opening the closet. Inside is a small black cat, with bright green eyes. The nuns breathe a sigh or relief. "Thank goodness, I thought it was a skunk!" one of the nun exclaims. She walks towards the cat, trying to pick it up. With almost superhuman speed, the cat avoids the nuns arm and scampers down a hall towards the church storage.
"I've got it," Masked says, following the mischievous feline down the hall. The cat keeps going until it reaches the end of the hall which is a dead end with only a few windows to let in light . Masked sneaks up on the cat, grabbing it swiftly before it could run again. He was about to take the cat outside, when his eyes caught something. It was the stained glass window that was at the end of the hall, that depicted an angel, with glittering blonde hair and the purest white dress. The red and blue glass that colored the background of the window diffused the light into red and blue fractals that danced on the walls and floor of the hall, bathing the priest in purple light.
Out of nowhere, the priest felt a presence behind him, and breath on the shell of his ear. "Whatcha looking at?" a voice asked, their lips a millimetre from his ear. Masked spun around, almost losing grip on the cat in his hands. There, floating in the air in front of him, was a demon. Masked took a few steps back, his back hitting the stained glass window. The demon stopped floating, his heels making a clicking noise as they met the stone floor.
He was around the same height as Masked, and had long black hair. He wore a suit with a red tie and had a pure black tail. Masked couldn't help but stare at the tail in disbelief. "Do you... not like the tail? Because I can get rid of it for you, baby," and with a snap of the demon's perfect manicured fingers, the tail disappeared, though Masked wished the demon in front of him had disappeared with it.
The cat, who managed to struggle it's way out of Masked's grip, jumped down to the floor. It pranced over to the demon, and began to nuzzle the demon's leg. The back haired demon looked down and smiled, giving the cat a small pet, which in turn caused the cat to purr in content. "Hello Lizzy," the demon says, addressing the feline at his feet.
Masked, still shaken by the oddity of this encounter, reached in his cassock, looking for the cross that he usually carried with him. His hands only met fabric, as he realized that he had left it in his room. "Looking for this?" the demon asked, as he pulled the masked priest's cross out of his suit pocket. Masked's eyes widened in surprise, as the demon chuckled "It's gonna take more than a small piece of wood to do me in," he says, offering the cross back to Masked. Hesitantly, he took the cross back and put it safely in his pocket.
"Who are you?" the masked man spat. "Now, now, no need to get mad at me," the demon says, holding his hand up in surrender. "I'm Medi, Incubus Supreme, at your service!" he exclaims, bowing to the priest sarcastically. Masked's face wrinkles in disgust. "Out of all types of demons...it had to be an incubus," he thought to himself, but despite this, keeping his guard up. "What are you doing here, Medi," Masked asks accusingly. The demon laughs again, taking a step closer to the priest. "Well, I was bored, and I thought I would give myself a little challenge," he takes another step closer. "What would happen if I corrupt a human who had the mark? Could I even do it? I think we should find out." A large grin forms on Medi's face, as Masked's heartbeat began to speed up.
Masked steels himself, as he stares coldly at the demon in front of him. "Try if you like, but I have been marked by the holy light of God, so it will be harder than you think." With that statement, Masked pushes past the demon, heading back to the main area of the church. Medi, slightly shocked by this action, begins to float after the masked priest, the black cat scampering after him. "Oh I do so love a challenge," Medi responds.
This was going to be one hell of a ride.
