I ran with my friend Dara through the grass, weaving through the many tiny train tracks. I had only met Dara this year at college but I'd already told him all about this place. It was my favourite place in the world. I'd come here ten years ago, when I was eight, but the memories had always stuck. It looked like something out of an eighties musical. All the colours were so bright and saturated, it was a magical sight. I led Dara to a little bright green painted shed with a turquoise roof and a little sign on the door saying, "Staff only. Sorry." with a smiley face. I opened the door regardless like I had so many years ago and Dara followed me. He whispered in my ear, "are you sure this mr. Eccles still works here?" I simply nodded and entered the workshop.
I remembered it more clearly than I thought. The door was heavy steel, quite hard to open, and the place was small but very long. Just as I thought, there was a little old man dressed in overalls working on a tiny train, repainting it. I walked over and smiled. "Hello mr. Eccles. It's me, Charlie from ten years ago." He looked at me with a wide eyed look then chuckled.
"Ah yes. I remember you. The little rascal who came to visit that one time. You had a fondness for turkey sandwiches." I smiled widely and nodded. Dara sighed in relief that he didn't freak out and call security or something. I knew he wouldn't. He was always a peaceful old man. He asked, "so what brings you to my little haven?" I smiled and shrugged,
"I just wanted to see you again. It was such a fun place to be last time." He gave a faint laugh then nodded curtly.
"I do have to be working though. Feel free to play with your friend little Charlie." He then hobbled over to a small room that was more of a cupboard and shut the door.
I smiled and then put my finger to my lips, leading Charlie over to the far side of the shed to a huge door. I knelt down and played with the handle a specific way and then opened the door. I remembered this door. It led to a long train track and all the seasonal trains from Easter to Halloween to Christmas. Currently it was midsummer so they would all be in here. I opened the door as quietly as I could and stepped inside. Then my hearing went numb. Huge animals were lining the walls. A gigantic squid hung with its eyes gouged out, a cat missing its tongue hung from its tail, a grizzly bear with it's intestines in a grizzly pile on the floor. A beheaded dolphin, or maybe a shark, and a leg less wolf. I wanted to scream. All these horribly dismembered animals. Most of them were odd species I didn't even know. My mind felt cold and my skin more so. I knew Dara must be yelling because I felt the hands shaking my shoulders. I gazed up above me and saw a beluga whale. The marble like skin was so perfect, but then I noticed the gaping hole in its head where the brain would be, grotesque and inhumane. I leaned forward and puked. Dara's hands left my shoulders then the next thing I knew there was a series of loud thuds. He must have been trying to get out. A single drop of the whale's blood met with my forehead and I let out a scream that made my gut twist. Then a wrinkled decrepit hand gripped my shoulder and I went silent. I gazed back at Mr. Eccles and I heard him whisper,
"The world changes Charlie. We must change with it. They were only harmless experiments. To improve mankind. No one will miss them. No one will miss you."
