Chapter 6

It was easing into the middle of the afternoon when Marc was finally able to lock himself in his bedroom and get some sleep. When he woke several hours later it was dark outside with the half moon hanging in the sky rather than the fiery sun.

Laying there in bed Marc didn’t rush to get up. He closed his eyes and listened to the other areas of the house. Shelby was in the living room watching some cartoon on TV. Jennifer was with Andrew asking him more questions about lycanthropy and what she could expect in the upcoming weeks. The young girl was scared and it made her voice vibrate with fear.

Carly was in her room on the second floor asleep. He heard the evenness of her heart beat as she slept.  Her breathing was soft and feminine, calm as probably her trip into town caught up with her. Marc had more questions he wanted to ask her but they could wait until tomorrow after she was rested.

With a slight groan Marc sat up and made up his mind to join the rest of the rest of the household downstairs. Along the way he stopped in the bathroom and freshened up by brushing his teeth and running his hands through his hair.  That was as good as it got tonight.

Stepping off the third floor and onto the second floor landing of the staircase Marc realized Carly didn’t sound peaceful anymore. Her breaths were shallow like panting past her lips. He knew a nightmare when he heard one and went to wake her up.

The bedroom door was unlocked. He opened it and gave his eyes a quick moment to adjust to the darkness. Carly’s legs were twisted around a blanket, her upper body fared no better as her nightmare left her anxious and tense.

Marc stood back and watched with interest at the words mumbled past her lips.  “I’m sorry…” the words were soft and tearful. “…I promise. I promise.”

Marc cursed under his breath and moved forward. There was no question the mystery surrounding this girl was bigger than even he first thought and of course she was going to fight him every step of the way to keep those secrets. “Carly.” His voice was firm to reach the animal more than the woman.

She stopped moving and listened to the sound of his voice. It wasn’t until he gripped her shoulder that her grey eyes opened. They were tearful and wide. Her mouth trembled with tears she was fighting back.

Marc cursed again, the last thing he needed right now was to feel anything for this girl. Her wide sad eyes were gut clenching. “Are you ok?” he asked.

“What happened?”

“I was on my way downstairs when I heard you having a nightmare. Do you want to talk about it?” Marc knew it’d never be that easy but it didn’t hurt to ask on the off chance he was wrong.

Carly shook her head and sat up on the mattress. “You’d like that, wouldn’t you?”

“I would. I’m not the bad guy here and if you want to talk or need some help I’m the best bet you have.”

“There’s nothing to say.”

He scoffed. “Come on Ms. Kennedy, you’re not even trying to believe your own words anymore.” Marc turned around and left the bedroom. He had better things to go do, like find a strong cup of coffee.

When he reached the kitchen he found Andrew but no Jennifer. He asked Andrew about the new girl while he moved to the coffee pot and started a fresh pot. “I sent her to get some rest.” Andrew answered. “Did you get any?”

“Oh yeah, I slept like a baby.”

“Hmm, what did Cary do now?”

Marc turned around to face his friend. “What does that mean? She’s been here only a day and now she’s the source of my problems?” he crossed his arms and leaned back into the counter.
